I am leaving the snowy North (not snowy this year though, grrr) for a six month trip to New Zealand. I’ll be living in Dunedin, which is on the Otago Penninsula of the South Island. I have two questions really, first; Does anyone have any advice on “must see” places or events while I’m there? Secondly, is there any sort of Irish music community anywhere near there, or am I out of luck?
Me, I got to stay here for rain, hail wind and snow.
If you are in Dunedin, a visit to the Royal Albatross Colony is a must.
Sessions in Dunedin, the only one I know of is at Dicey O’Rileys Irish Pub. I’m sure there are others.
Hey, if you are in New Zealand there are a lot more fun things to do than sit around in a pub.
Personal favorites:
Kaikoura, Great little town with very friendly people, excellent Whale Watching (20 m - Sperm whales).
The Nelson trek, by foot or Kayak.
Queenstown, endless amount of things to do here, as long as you got some $$$
BTW: If you get too much to drink and end up in a quarrel with some big guy with tattoos in his face. Just learn this phrase and scream it out load while making funny faces and stare him in the eyes and you will be ok.
Ka mate, Ka mate, Ka ora, Ka ora
Tenei Te, Tangata, Puhuruhuru
Nana i tiki mai, whakawhiti te ra
Upane, Upane
Upane, Kaupane
Whiti te ra
Just about anywhere in the South Island will provide spectacular scenery. Get in as much travel as you can. I did.
Dunedin is a Scottish town. (In New Zealand there really was a difference where the English and Scottish settled.) Why not take the opportunity to play some Scottish music. I’ve never lived in Dunedin but I’ve visited and I’d be surprised if there isn’t a Scottish TM scene.
