Glenn Schultz Flute on eBay

Has anybody ever played one of these? I’m just curious what they’re like.

 Why don’t you ask Doc Jones?

I’ve had one for several years. As with all Glenn’s instruments, it’s incredibly beautiful. I would not recommend it for a beginner. I had a lot of trouble with it, and in fact, got another flute as a starter flute. It’s loosely based on a Rudall design, but has large tone holes – size a tad larger than an Olwell Nicholson, but not as large as a Hammy.

Once you get the hang of it, it’s a very rewarding flute to play. It feels really nice in the hands, and has a great balance between the low and high registers. On a good day, I can get a really good, strong low-D (this is something I have trouble with on most flutes); on any day I can comfortably play up to the 3rd octave G, up to A on a good day. It can be played dirty, but I think it sounds best played pure and sweetly. Volume-wise, it can be pushed a little, but it’ll never compete with a Hammy.

That looks like a beautiful flute!

I bet you could trust the seller, too!

Too true. He’s the nicest fellow I’ve ever Been.

Having been invoked by Sillydill I’ll just say that Chas’ assessment of Glenn’s work would apply to this flute as well,

with the exception that this flute has a wonderful and easy bottem D.

I would also characterize it as a sort of nuanced flute in that, as Chas said, you don’t just pick it up and play your best on your first meeting. It expects a little something special in the embouchre, nothing difficult just something personal. It took me a day or two to find what it was after. I suspect that a serious long-term relationship with this flute would be richly rewarding.

The advantage of a flute that is responsive to subtle changes in the embouchre is that it makes for a very broad & expressive tonal pallette.

Anyway, it feels great and plays wonderfully.

:sunglasses: Disclaimer: :sunglasses:

Doc Jones is the seller of this flute and probably shouldn’t be saying nice things about it. Doc Jones voted for George W. Bush twice which shows clear evidence of impaired judgement. This flute should not be used as a flotation device.

I meant to convey that – I have a difficult time getting a good low-D on most flutes; I actually have an easier time on Glenn’s.
