Ginsberg D set Regulator Reeds

has anyone got some reed sizes for the ginsberg D regulators ?
a friend of mine and myself have a ginsberg set each and we are currently using the Hegarty book sizes as a guide but we’re interested
in having the original sizes as a comparison.
thanks
kalle

Why don’t you contact Alan Ginsberg himself:

I have made regulator reeds for a Ginsberg D set. I’ve got the dimensions around here somewhere…I’ll post them when I find them!

Paul

i have contacted alan about the sizes.
this is his reply

Dear Kalle
All the sizes of reeds are in my plans which cost £55 including postage
All the best

Alan

i politely declined

Not to surprised by this response from the Ginsbergs

But let me advise that the reed dimensions given in the plans DO NOT work at all!!!

I have these dimensions and will post them tomorrow, ( time permitting)

I will say this however, having seen a lot of Ginsberg work the regulator reeds that he supplies in his pipes are nothing like those in the plans.

Basically a Ginsberg " Regulator" reed is nothing more that a chanter reed that has gone wrong.
I have known too many pipers that have Ginsberg Pipes and have been far from happy Regs in particular

I rather like my Ginsberg C regs actually. I had an set of regs in D that were older and took some fixing up, but then they were fine to play.

So D regulator reed dimensions…here goes:

Tenor - 5/32 tube 50mm long staple, cane ~11-11.5mm wide, 20mm tail, 26-28mm head
Bari - 3/16 tube 52mm long staple, cane ~12-12.5mm, 28mm tail, 28mm head
Bass - 3/16 tube 55mm long staple, cane 13mm wide, 28mm tail, 28-30mm head

That’s what worked for me. Hope that helps.
Paul

thanks paul.
we’ll give that a go

Magroibin,

Would you post the details of your C reg reeds to complete the picture, or PM me. That would be useful here.

Pwt

Sorry…those are still a work in progress. :frowning:

I have collected a variety of measurements (not as many as I’d like) for C regs. I am planning on testing them out to find what works, but that’s going to take some time. I’ve got too many chanter reeds to make first!

Message understood Magroibin - good luck. Mean time I will try my own iterative production to find something that will work. Chanter and drones sound nice so far.

Cheers

Pwt

Paul can ye remember the internal diameter of the staple eyes?

Um…er…ehh…no, not really. I wasn’t taking as detailed notes as I should have been then. Fortunately, regulator staples can be a little more forgiving than chanter staples…I hope.

But to try to answer your question, at least my my take the eyes were “average” sized.
