Spruce Regulator Reeds

In light of all the reg reed materials/postings, I thought it would be fun to post a file of a trio of spruce regs I recently made. Mind you, this was recorded w/ the internal mics of my Macbook… However, they capture the stability/performance/overall vibe of what they soundlike…more or less. I spent loads of time on the tenor reg, as the G-note on tenor regs are always such a bitch to work around… (ah, I feel better letting that out for the 9,865th time…this week! The rest… oh well… they ARE regulators after all. I’ll wait for a rainy day to pursue the quest for better tuning…
Enjoy!

Very nice sound and balance and very in tune… Great job!

WOW, man brother, that sounded lovely. That’s a nice combination of sounds you have there.

They sure sound like good solid regulator reeds to me. Congratulations!

Nothing wrong with those regs brother. A set of reeds to be proud of. Well done.
Mike

Thanks lads… very kind of you! I thought it to be nice to show what those reeds sound like.

some pics will be nice ..also dimension of reeds(mm please  )

Hello,
Excuse my ignorance  (I’m not a native English speaker). What does mean “Spruce”?
I guess it’s kind of wood but I tried google translation (English to French) and it didn’t translate this word.

Spruce is a family of evergreen trees. You can see a picture of a Norway Spruce at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spruce.

Spruce is Sapin rouge.

I’m not home at the minute…

the tenor was narrow at no more than 10.7mm and the staple was perhaps 50mm max. The bari was about 11.5, and the bass probably 13mm.

Inside diameter for the staples ,and lengths the same?I have a working baritone spruce reed made by myself, need too make a bass, and tenor one of these days.

I use tubing staples for regs. I only have imperial measurements for those, as that is the kind of hobby tubing I use for regs. Ten & bari are 5/32, and bass is 3/16. The lengths will vary depending on reg, but more how you finish the head; w/ the tenor being the shortest (I think mine is 48mm?). Can’t recall the bari. My bass is probably 50-52mm.

Simply goa wee bit longer than you think you need, and if the pitch is low, just file (or belt sand) the staple shorter.

Thanks for the info!

I think you are quoting outer diameters there. The imperial tubing is typically 1/64" wall thickness, so inner diameters would be 1/8" (i.e. 3.17mm) and 5/32" (3.96mm), respectively. The 5/32" inner diameter is nearly the same as the metric 4mm I.D. and the 1/8" I.D. would be commonly used over here for flat reeds.

Of course the appropriate staples for regs depend on your pipes, so you should always consult the maker. Many players seem unclear about the fact that staple dimensions are very specific to particular chanter and regulator bores, and different size staples cannot as a rule be successfully substituted for one another. That said, the inner diameters given above are not atypical for concert pitch regulators.
