Just gota Gael wooden whistle in D. Very nice too. Takes quite a bit of force to get the 2nd octave clearly though. Anyone else played one of these?
Hmm, no, please describe its appearance and cost.
Is this another Weltmeister incarnation?
Hand made by Alder Heinrich these whistles are made from maple. Mine is a cool metallic green colour although many finishes are available. They cost £30 Str and are well worth it. Mine came from ‘the music room’ in Oxford, England, 'though their website does not list them yet.
Would this then be the whistles at Adler-Heinrich → Instruments → Wood-Whistle?
Yup. Weltmeister, Adler Heinrich. Run a search there has been a bit of discussion about them, off and on.
Ralph Sweet would take these for a while and re-voice them and fix some of the holes to make them play better, esp. in the second octave. I don’t know if he still does, now that they have such a great “Pro” model.
are the sweetheart ones much better then?
Say, wasn’t Ralph making keyed whistles for a while? I’ve been toying with the idea (simply because I’m a looney) of adding keys to a wooden whistle!

I went up to that website, and the stuff looks really nice, but I can’t figure out how to buy anything. I’m especially interested in the “chalumeau” line, because it looks like it would be fun to play. Does anybody know how much they are? I did send them an email already, just asking.
Also, the site says the whistle is part of the recorder family. Since the whistle has been around longer, shouldn’t that be the other way around?
Thanks,
Randy Orman
Actually, it’s kind of a chicken / egg thing which have been around longer, whistles or recorders (or the “black sheep” of the family, flageolets), because if you go back far enough they start merging into a single kind of instrument.

I think they’re primarily a maker of recorders (check out their old logo), which could explain the bias.
There have been fippled flutes of various designs around for a very long time…I think it’s most accurate to say that the recorder and the whistle (as well as the flageolet and some other instruments) are all members of the fipple flute or block flute family.

Hey bloom, I have a Weltmeister and it is a killer whistle. It does smell something like the pencil sharpener that used to hang on the wall by the door in secound grade but it plays great. Loud as can be, big holes to mess with and once its warmed up the secound octive is a breaze to play. I realy like it. And its pink to boot. Cost 30 bucks and well worth it.

As one source, Antique Sound Workshop sells their stuff.
I wasn’t saying that they were bad. I’ve only played a Ralph-Sweet-improved one, and it was lovely, a bit forceful perhaps.
