Anyone heard of Alder Heinrich whistles?

I was at a local music store and I spotted these two wooden whistles in “d”. The girl behind the counter told me they were made by Alder Heinrich, and that the company normally makes recorders and such. Since it was a “you try it, you buy it” proposition, and they go for $60 CAD each, I figured I would see if any of you have ever tried these whistles.

I’ve not personally played one, but they do get discussed here from time to time.

If you try the search function, I think you’ll find at least two threads on these whistles.

I suggest that you spell it Adler (not Alder) when you do the search…you’ll get more hits! :wink:

I have tried one of these in a shop in Seattle, and it was less than acceptable. Tuning was a big issue, and the sound just seemed to fall apart in the second octave. I think that if you just played it in the lower octave, it would be a fine-sounding whistle, but there was something not right about things above the middle D on the one I tried. I think you’ll find that there are some who have had better luck.

Sounds a lot like the wooden whistle I picked up at Lark in the Morning for $25. It had no maker’s mark, and was a light-colored wood (oak?). It looks similar to Ralph Sweet’s wooden whistles, with that recorder-like head. I can post a few pictures if you like…

Don’t they make recorders? Seems like I read where they put out a (wooden) whistle, but it wasn’t great.

That last link you posted, that’s the one. I don’t think I’m going to bother to be honest. For a little more I can get a Water Weasel. I’ve been interested in trying one of those out, and although I won’t be able to try it first, (like any other whistle I’ve bought) I’ve heard enough good reviews to be confident.

I wish I had one to mess with. I bet you could rework the blade with a thin ceder shim. There is a guy by the name of Lee Collins that takes Zen-on plastic recorders and revoices them with ceder shims. I was getting ready to order one when the whistle fever hit me. Hahahahahah!
