I don’t see any Wooten clips on either of those pages, which is a shame
because Victor Wooten is the freakin’ man. I was not familiar with Louis
Johnson, however… thanks! In that first vid, he frets with his thumb more
often than I would’ve thought necessary for bass…
The thumb-fretting is a personal preference thing, and not really taught as part of a technique structure. I know a couple of guys who do fret with their thumbs, but I can’t; it throws me too far off from where I position my hand.
That’s odd, there were wooten vids when I viewed those earlier…they must be on some rotation. If you do a search for wooten on youtube you get a lot of great vids of him doing his thing. One of my favs is his solo while he was a guest perfomer with DMB at Red Rocks amphetheater.
cool stuff.
I was just doing that very thing. The Dave Mathews appearance is pretty
sweet. There’s one of him doing an improv in the studio, too, that shows off
some fingertapping. Nice. Right now I’m watching his solo at a Bela Fleck
concert. Crazy stuff. I <3 the Internet. (Holy crap, he broke a string and kept
on going! What a trooper!)
I saw a Flecktones concert once. They’re all outstanding.
Tyler, I didn’t know you played bass!
I’ve been thinking about learning some basics on a bass fiddle so I can join in with bluegrass groups. It seems there’s always a need for bassists in the local bluegrass scene. Moreso than there is for a mountain dulcimer.
Yeah, bass is my primary instrument right now. I make a little money on the side filling in in various bands, but I’ve got no steady band of my own right now. Used to have a Journey tribute band in which I played piano/keyboards (the insturment I started on), but I get much more satisfaction from playing bass (more oportunity to make money too; everyone and their dog plays piano here in utah, but bassists that can read music and understand theory are rare).
I don’t have me a double-bass yet, but one o these days I will (there’s a luthier that makes them locally for a very good price, and I would like to get one of his). On the occasions I play with an acoustic group, I’ve got a halfway decent acoustic bass with a nice piezo pickup and a nice little amp that’s easily hidden .
Since returning to school I’ve been working on some solo work. I’ve found solo recording to be much harder than recording with a band; less input means a lesser product in many respects. Maybe I’ll host a few tracks when I’ve gotten them to a point where I’m not totally embarrassed by them
