So anyway, I just got to see this fellow, courtesy of a friend who had to drag me kicking and screaming.
And I was . . .kind of transfixed. I didn’t know what this whole “beatbox” thing was about. Now I have a better idea.
There’s a video of Kid Beyond demonstrating how he puts his – songs? grooves? beats? – together right here. The bit at the end is fun to watch, as he pieces together a composition from a bunch of small snippets, all done with his voice. It’s not Bach, but it’s kinda fun. The neat part about watching it live is seeing the piece get built right there. The guy has his own website right here, too.
He’s hosting some sort of beatbox competition this weekend in San Francisco. I’m not sure I could listen to this stuff for so long, though, as transfixing as it is for a while. A bit too glow-stick/furry pants-ish for me. Still, sorta neat.
Boy, computers and digital recording sure have changed things. I feel so nineteenth-century, now.
Look, Mister Let’s-Make-Sure-There’s-A-Little-Rain-On-Every-Parade Dude, nobody said it was new. Just kinda neat.
You’re one of those people who lives to make sure nobody gets too comfortable with themselves, ain’t ya? Somebody’s been spending too much time wearing the Grumpy Pants.
Gee, I thought I was being nice, and thanked you for the link. I have been frigging with stuff like that since 1980: sequencers, looping, synthesizers, then midi, computer controllers, and now digital recording. Talk about grumpy pants, at least mine aren’t wet.
Huh, what a coincidence. I just discovered KT Tunstall, who does
the same sort of loopbox layering. Apparantly she’s big in Europe
(and just reaching the US). You can see a video of her schtick here.
I’ll have to check out this Kid Beyond when I get home to a
computer with speakers.
I was kidding, that’s why I was looking for the stick-poke thingie. I just now noticed that there’s a “View more emoticons” button over there; I’m not much of an emoticon sort of person. It’s entirely possible I don’t quite get their use, too; I thought they often served to sort of deflate the ribbing portion of a post.
I’ve just always found funny-odd the habit some people have of preceding thanks or praise with a “but” phrase.
Guy 1: Hey! Check it out! I just found this really cool cave to explore!
Guy 2: Well, I’ve already seen one like it, but this one’s real nice, too.
(Is that right? Maybe I need to read up on emoticon culture…)
Congratulations, isn’t Victor Wooten amazing? I’ve seen him with BF a couple of times out here, and he always gets a couple of feature solos. He did a pretty impressive rendition of a Bach piece last time I saw him, and also took over the banjo parts – on his bass – a couple times. Wow.
Well Bach and banjo parts are all very well but did he do 'Fling the Bass over the shoulder and catch and never miss a beat" trick. Now THATS entertainment!
