Umm… Not to be a damper, but it is just about as unwise to post picies of valuable instruments as it is of yourself in provocative poses… I’m sure none of the regulars here are evil nasty instrument kidnappers, but they are out there, and they do target collections. Just be cautious.
buddhu- are you referencing your Glocester mandolin? He he… if it ever needs some playmates, I’d be happy to adopt it!!
This is a compalation of 5 years of buying/selling/restoring. I’ll post more stuff as I finish it. I like to see what other people are playing, and LOVE older folk instruments! The people in the pipe forum made a stellar run at a “pics of” their instruments, I think stringed players could have an equally good run!
Yup. Unloaded all mandolins, guitars and basses except the Gloucester (which I’m keeping ), a Crafter mando (which I’ll sell when I fix the electrics), and an Epiphone copy of a Gibson EB0 bass, which I’ll also sell when I can be bothered to package it up and weigh for postage.
You may have noticed that I totally forgot to post the pic… Doh. Will do it later (unless I forget again).
Well, the Les Paul guitar has been around long enough to be considered traditional…
I wanted one of those for ages and ages, but could never justify the bucks for something I wouldn’t really play very often. Then I got wind of a kit version for something like $149. It’s basically an assemble and apply a finish job , but the results are surprisingly good. The color is a match for my wife’s Grand Am 'cause I love the color:
And I couldn’t resist a bit of a pun for the headstock label:
Nice looking guitar Paul! I…uh…don’t get the pun, but you spelled it wrong, should be "LES Pa… oh I get it
May I ask where you got the kit? I love the Les Paul styling, and have wanted to make an electric mando or octave mando resembling a LP. A kit would save TONNES of time!!
If ya don’t like Les Paul, they also have kits for Tele, Strat, SG. How about a bass mandolin: they also have a Fender Precision copy.
One word of advice: I didn’t personally have any problems but some other builders have reported poor fit of some components. Do a COMPLETE dry run assembly including all wiring before applying your finish.
I just adore the 5 string set up on the violin! Really a spectacular instrument! I’ve always meant to try a six string some time, never found anyone with one though. The fifth string adds some nice sypmpathetics I find, and makes it possible to play (some) tunes in octaves against another violin (yeah, you’re thinking "just get a viola then ) I’ve done this in a session, and dueting with another player. Its a pretty neat effect!
The white electric has no F holes (I believe) for feedback reduction purposes. Also cosmetically, it looks pretty sleek too! I gave it a good cleaning last year, and took the plate with the electronics controlls off of the bottom bout… I was shocked to discover it had no soundpost! I fit one, which was hard to figure out best placement, and it sounds 100% better now.
This is NOT a lefty, but it’s pretending to be. It’s just I don’t have a camera except the little iCam thing at the top of my screen, and it reverses everything when it takes still photos. Not videos though. I wish it took clearer pictures, but whatever. Here’s my fiddle.
say Caj, what’s the “vintage” of your lefty there? Who made it? (Man or machine? ) Looks pretty new! Glad to hear you have a REAL lefty, they sound (to me) gross when the sound post and bass bar are on the wrong sides. Nice touch with the concertina in the pic… and the wine glass… almost looks liek a posh CD cover
Same question to you, seisflutes. I really like to know all the little details about an instrument; many a year pass through my shop, and I’m a little obsessed!
Dan, is your creation (does look very nice with the sound hole arrangement, by the way) based on a “real” instrument, or is it of your own design? What timbres did you use? Looks like oak or walnut or something darker, but if its stained… you tell me!
