Fullerton Gloucester mandolin FS

No, not mine! Not on yer life!
Mr. Nate sent me the link to this one on Amazon.com though. Price is $325, which is higher than they sold for on Music123, but still good for a mandolin this nice.

Paul, ya got me! I saw that title and said “WHAT??!!” :astonished:

Same as that. For a moment I thought you’d gone nuts, Paul. You nearly gave me a heart attack!

As you say, that’s still a good price for such a great entry level mando. In fact, he could add $100 and it’d still easily beat anything else at the price for playability and sound.

I’m currently saving for a Collings MT or MT2. I’ll be unloading a load of stuff when the time comes to buy that, but no way is the Gloucester going anywhere.

I can’t believe I considered selling mine once. I have a mic installed in it now and it is the mando I use for all our amplified gigs. It’s also the one I take on vacations to Ireland to use in sessions.

hey, speaking of mics etc..
I had the Gloucester at a big session last night and had a hard time hearing myself. Is there any simple way I could mic it into an ear bud? It would need battery power.

Yeh, I know the problem!

What I installed in my Gloucester is one of these:

What I have occasionally done is take a jack lead from that into my old Korg Pandora PX2 FX unit/headphone practice amp

and then plug a bud into the headphone output. Any headphone practice amp will do.

There are numerous pickup options too: stick-on piezos etc. I went with the mini-mic as the sound seems more natural to me than the piezo pickups I’ve used. The only slight issue is feedback, but a strip of masking tape over each f-hole sorts that out.

Yup, old problem.

Any headphone practice amp will do the trick. All the dealers have them.

You can either go with a mic or a pickup. Personally, I like the pickup because it doesn’t feedback, although it colors the sound to some degree. That’s OK when you’re the only one hearing it through the headphone. It doesn’t sound horrible, but it isn’t the true sound of a mic. It is a little easier to use and provides personal monitoring, which is really all you’re after. K&K makes a nice affordable pickup that sticks to the top and has a very decent sound.

Putting tape over the holes is the old standby when using mics. It stops the feedback, but cuts the sound to the audience (since you’re not playing to them through an amp). If you can get away without the tape trick, the mic will give you a better sound in the earbud, but feedback can be a real problem sometimes, especially when it’s right in your ear.

Both have their upsides and downsides. Oh well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, as they say.

Oh, I disagree with Rick on one thing. Amazon could add $300 to that price and it would still be a better F-style than anything in it’s price range! An A-style yes, an F-style, not a chance.

Oops… The tape on the f-holes is when I’m playing through the Marshall amp. I don’t get feedback when playing through headphones.

Sorry, didn’t make myself clear.

Paul, since Rick has established that feedback isn’t a problem specifically for the Gloucester in this configuration, I’d recommend the mic as well. The sound will be a lot better.

Amazon shows the mandos as being unavailable

Anybody got one they want to sell cheap :smiling_imp:
