FS: Various flutes (bamboo flutes, bansuri, dizi & ney)

I want to sell a few flutes which I don’t use at all and I don’t want them to be covered with dust !

  • 2 very good bamboo flutes by my friend Chris Dawson (Rhiannon flutes)
one in G and one in E ( 80 Euros each)

  • a beautiful professional chinese Dizi flute in the key of C (tonic is G) in bamboo, engraved, with case and a lot of quality dimo (reed paper) and special glue. Sounds amazing. I bought it from great chinese player Tim Liu. 150 Euros

  • a small dizi in A (tonic is E) also with reed paper 30 Euros

  • 3 bansuris from maker Nikhilesh Roy from Calcutta. I picked them myself. they are in Eflat, E & F. (which means they play down to Bb, B and C) 80 Euros each. good deep tone.

  • a 2 months old bansuri from great maker Pratap Gujar, in the key of E(plays down to An) 90 Euros

  • a superb Turkish Ney (reed flute) in Mansur-Shah-Mabeyni (Fsharp, very low pitch) with silver rings, 2 baspare (mouthpiece, one in olive wood and one in delrin.) made by master Fabio. 150 Euros

PM or e-mail me for pictures and informations,
sorry this is a bit off topic apart from the Rhiannon bamboo flutes, but I thought that some of you would be interested…

Cheers,

Sylvain

If the key of your Gujar flute is E at XXX XXX you cannot play down any further to A
and if
the key of that flute is E at XXX OOO (Hindustani ID) you still cannot play down to A because it goes down only to B (or Bb if there is a pinky hole).

However if it is Carnatic key description as E at XXO OOO, only then can it go down to A.

The convention (to save confusion) amongst bansuri makers talking to westerners is to
*describe this XXX XXX as the key, and
*describe this XXX OOO as the tonic.
Terminology is never absolute but relative and contextual. In the context of bansuri description what I am saying is the convention (and it is not my convention).

Could you please describe your flute less confusingly as I suggested by PM so that I can recommend your post to potential customers? For instance,
what is this XXX XXX note on your Gujar flute
OR what is XXX OOO note on it?

Thanks.

sorry mistake, I was writing too fast…
the Gujar flute is in A, and it plays down to E. (down to Eb with the 7th hole) so to be clear the key ¶ is E and the tonic (Sa) is A.

OK, there is a lady in the bansi links topic might be wanting a B key/ E Sa (tonic) flute as per your Roy collection. What is the hertz for that?

The E and Eflat are sharper than concert pitch, they play A=446. apart from the F one which plays at A=440.

Thanks for prompt answer. Hope things go well for you.

BTW, I don’t mean to be nosy (though I am)
but are you giving up on bansuri?

no I’m not giving up, I still have a collection of around 25 bansuri flutes from bass E (shankh bansuri) to high C. The thing is I don’t use the ones I have listed for sale since I have got the same flutes in the same key already from different makers.

The dizi in C and the ney are now sold.

price of Rhiannon bamboo flutes in E and G lowered to 70 Euros each

price of the 3 ROY bansuri flutes lowered to 70 Euros each

who is tim Liu? i’ve never heard of this person’s name.
in china ,the most famous bamboo flute players are Xunfa YU, Songting Zhao, Yongming Zhan.. but i 've never heard of him ,what’s his chinese name?

and obviously ,the flute you bought is too expensive, could you show me the picture? i think you were cheated.

and you can see my bamboo flutes

i can tell you , my flutes each of them are less than 100euros, but they are professional flutes in china, and top level. so next time you wanna buy chinese flutes, don’t be cheated.

The second last one looks like 8 holes xiao rather than dizi. Its marked G which i guess it plays in key D and toxic G ( second lowest hole normally covered, isnt it ? )

Did u convert it from xiao into dizi ? Im wondering because i have those xiaos too and want to convert it into flute.

I added your msn already. Nice to meet ya.

Sorry… off road :sniffle: :sniffle:

Tim Liu was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and graduated in 1979 from the College of Chinese Culture in Taipei where he studied “Dizi” (also known as “D’Tzu”), the Chinese bamboo flute with Chen Sheng-Tien and “Erhu” from Li Chen Tung. In 1981, Mr. Liu was awarded the prestigious Best Musician Award in the Golden Lion Bamboo Flute Solo Contest. He has also served as a soloist and was a member of the Taipei City Chinese Classical Orchestra from 1981 to 1983. Since his arrival in the United States, Mr. Liu has been recognized as one of the outstanding masters of the Dizi in this country and was the principal flutist of the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York from 1983-1992. He has been teaching traditional Chinese flute for over 20 years.
