FS: Rudall, Carte & Co. flute #6745 for sale.

Hi list,

I know, I’ve been raving about my Rudall quite recently, but: I have been offered another flute which I cannot refuse, so I have to raise the funds somehow…

So I’m offering my Rudall Carte & Co. simple system flute for sale. Serial number 6745. Address is 20 Charing Cross. Cocuswood, nickel silver, pristine condition. Plays lovely down to D at 440Hz (slide extended about 12-20mm depending on player), C# and C keys need work (pewters leaking). Detailed photos available, I see if I can get a sound sample together.

The flute had the usual barrel and headjoint cracks, which have been professionally cared for by Jon C. - Jon also repaired a cracked socket on the right hand section by grafting new wood into the socket. The cracks are unlikely to open every again and are barely invisible.

Springs and pads are entirely original (save the long F pad, which is a replacement, but in the purse pad style). The flutes comes in an original Rudall case (lid hinge detached, but could be repaired with two small brass hinges or so). The key is missing. The case also includes an original cocuswood greasepot.

The flute shows barely and sings of playing, it actually looks like it left the shop a week ago. Really a great player. I got the flute from Dave Migoya who can vouch for its quality (and me, if needed ).

I am asking 3200 euro, which is what I have in it. I think this is a fair price, but I will entertain reasonable offers, too. Shipping is included in europe, overseas is extra.

Let me know if you’re interested.

All the best,
Steffen Gabriel

Beautiful. Can I ask what other flute was offered to you that is more desiderable than this one?

Sale pending…

I’ll introduce the flute once it’s here.

Flute is sold back to its home, the UK.

Whoever it is got a bargain, I reckon.

OK, I confess, it was me, been waiting for one for a while and I couldn’t resist it…but just wait until you hear what Steffen needed the money for!

Oh man, what could be more desiderable than a good large holed Rudall? Let’s see, if it’s an antique, I’ll guess a Wylde, if modern, a Wilkes…

congradulations mark! if i dont see it tonight i hope i can catch a glimpse (and maby a quick toot) when your over in Cork.

… can i have your grinter then? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d already put two and two together that it was you, Mark. Nice aren’t they?

thanks to Steffen for parting with the RC&C, arrived this morning. I’ll let it acclimatise with the other flutes for a bit but had a brief play on it this morning. Gorgeous flute.

Can’t speak highly enough for the condition of the instrument and for Jon’s repairs, looks like it came out of the workshop a month ago (looks a lot newer than my new flutes anyway!). You often get the impression that ones in such good condition might have been left on the shelf because they were less playable. However, just on first impression from a few minutes playing, that isn’t the case with this one. Gorgeous tone and very playable in tune all the way down to a big low D (simply massive, overtoned, low E).

According to my digital tuner, the shorter foot of the late series model does exactly what it says on the tin without me even thinking about correcting for it, spot on tune . As expected it sounded a little flat at the F# but, surprisingly, the A/B didn’t seem too sharp at all.

The tone will be beautiful (rich, deep, reedy) when blowing very ‘down’ at the embouchure and the good news is that I can play it that way at 440Hz with 6-8mm tuning slide, so it will be perfect…once I practice enough to keep those lip muscles under control for the length of an evening!

No point in offering any more analysis until it’s been played for a few weeks…
