FS: Eight-keyed Flute by Maurice Reviol (on eBay)

My other thread got hijacked, so I’m re-posting this instead of bumping. I hope it’s conform with the rules.

Please keep posts on topic. I’m happy to respond to questions in this thread as long as I find them between spam messages.

Hiya,

I acquired a great Aebi Pratten secondhand and can’t justify holding two eight-keyed Prattens, so I decided to sell my eight-keyed Reviol since the Aebi plays more ergonomically for me. I found out that, after a couple of hours of constant playing, my left hand starts to hurt. This doesn’t happen when playing the Aebi, so I guess my fingers are too short for the Reviol’s “upper hand section”'s (the flute has a one-piece middle part) diameter, which is quite a bit bigger than on the Aebi. The stretch between the holes isn’t a problem, but one’s hands/fingers should be on the bigger side.

The Reviol is by far the loudest flute I ever met. It likes to get pushed quite hard and is very suitable for the powerful northern playing style. The sound tends to be a bit Rudallish with quite some reediness, but it’s still very open and carrying. Follow the link in below for some (bad) soundfiles. I’ll try to get up some better recordings as soon as I recovered from my acute ear.

The flute is made of Satiné a.k.a. Muirapiranga a.k.a. Bloodwood which has tonal qualities similar to snakewood since it’s closely related to it. The keys are made of brass and bronze and are plated with silver. French-style head joint (partially lined). Go to www.reviol.co.nz for photos, my flute is the one in the second row from top in the gallery. Serial #76.

Issues: there is a tiny hairline crack in the surface of the food joint. The footjoint has been replaced already due to the same issue, and it developed a new crack. The crack doesn’t extend to the bore (actually it’s just a few micrometers deep) and has been stabilized, no further cracks since then. Very difficult to take a picture since the crack is so tiny, but you’ll find the best I could take below.
Furthermore, there is a small ding in the wood near LH3, I really don’t have a clue how it got there…barely visible, but I tried to take a photo.

I’m asking 1500 euro or best offer (they’re 2000+ new). Insured shipping included in europe, if you’re across the pond I’ll add the difference between shipping cost in europe and to your location. I might also fancy a good (partial) trade.

In case you want to check my reputation, here’s what ebay has to say.

You can contact me via email (see below) or PN.

Thanks for your consideration!

Best regards,
Gabriel

Sound file
A (mostly) chromatic scale from low C to 3rd octave G (warning, it’s quite loud), followed by a D(mix) scale, followed by some tunes, all incorporating the foot keys (I missed the last one a bit…don’t play that one very often).

Bump…

I would also consider to take a trade-in as a part of the price, or entertain the best offer.

Final price reduction to 1500 euro (or best offer). I guess you won’t find a quality eight-keyed flute for less.

I will list it on ebay if nobody from here wants it…even though I hate doing that.

Flute is on ebay now…

I have played this flute a couple of times, and I am much surprised there have been no takers here on C+F so far. It’s a grand flute, lovely finish, fantastic keywork and a massive big sound. If you’re stuck in a session between a concertina and a Paolo Soprani accordion, this flute is your friend!
If it goes for only 1500 Euro or even less, it’ll be a ridiculous bargain!

Here’s a clip I just recorded. Pretty rough sounding due to the lack of proper equipment, but you get the idea.

Great tone…on a great sounding flute…oh, and the playing is great too.
This is a deal.

Ending tomorrow…it’s still possible to grab a quality eight-keyer at a ridiculous low price (reserve has been met).

Damned tempting, Gabe. But I have to buy a new refrigerator suddenly. I can only watch and wish.

Gabriel,

just watched the video. Lovely playing and lovely flute. I’m up to my arse in great flutes (well, maybe not as much as Jon C.).
Sorry I can’t help you out.

Bump for a fine flute and fine player.

Bump away… but hasn’t the flute been sold?

Cocus! Whatsamatta? You no love me anymore?

Good luck with the sale, Gabe!!

Thank you all…

cocus: Nope, it’s here: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300197133208

Someone won a great deal and I lost around 1000 euros. I hope I’ll never ever have to sell an instrument again.

edit Just learned that a chiffer won the flute. Good to know that, so I can be sure that it will be loved and played. That’s at least a small solace.
