FS- D Hunterpipes 3/4 Body

I am unfortunately in the position of needing to sell my Hunterpipes (Sam Lawrence) 3/4 concert pitch set. There is NO CHANTER or BELLOWS included in this sale. The set is in ebony, boxwood and nickle silver. Sam based the look of these pipes on a few old Egan sets, and I think he did a great job capturing that aesthetic.

The set sounds and plays great. Definitely the best sounding drones I’ve ever owned, and they hold their own among the best I’ve heard. The regulators are the narrower of the two bores Sam offers. They are bang on in tune, and have a lovely mellow sound, as opposed to the traffic jam sonority D regs so often have. Sam made the F# and G keys on the baritone regulator about a centimeter longer to allow you to play F#/B and G/C, as well as the usual F#/A and G/B combinations. This doesn’t really affect the look of the keys at all, but allows you to voice some very cool chords between the two regulators and chanter that are not available on other sets.

This set was delivered in the spring of 2012, and has been played a lot. They’ve been very well cared for and have no damage or problems. In the interest of full disclosure, the only real wear on the set is on the finish of the mainstock-- it has a black (I think shellac based) finish on it, which has gotten a little scratched up. I have a friend with a gorgeous old Willie Rowsome set that has a similar finish on the stock, and I love the way its developed character over the years, so I actually think it looks pretty cool like this, but, I think it could pretty easily be touched up if you wanted.

A new set like this from Sam would set you back £3100, which is over $5100, plus a year wait. I’d like to get $4500 for the set. Again, they do not come with a chanter or bellows. They’re in a nice fiddle case which has been modified inside to fit the pipes. I’m in Portland ME, so if you’re in New England you’re welcome to come check the out. Otherwise, buyer pays shipping.

PLEASE don’t send me a private message on C&F, I very rarely check them. Email me at jack (at) jackdevereux (dot) com, or give me a call at 828 Seven Six Eight 2884. Thanks for looking!

If you want additional pictures or any recordings, send me an email!

Because several people have asked-- I bought this set from Sam without a chanter or bellows. I had a chanter I liked and an old beat up functional bellows I decided to keep using to save money. I’m not splitting up the body from the chanter or anything like that.

Is it just the light or is the boxwood “brightened”?

Here are some recordings of the set. First one is from a show about a year ago, second was done this afternoon. Both were recorded with one large diaphragm condenser microphone, a couple feet off the mainstock, with no effects or tricks of any kind. The chanter is both recordings is a Quinn from the mid 80s. I think this gives a pretty good indication of how stable this set is-- drones and regulators play completely in tune with no wavering throughout the range of the chanter and across a wide range of pressures. I’ll try and upload some more pictures tomorrow.
