FS: Burke, MK, ONYX, Dixon, and Susato Whistles

I find that I only play my quietest whistles and that I am not playing the other whistles I have so I have decided to part with them.

For further information and photos please check the following listings in the Instruments Exchange of the Chiff and Fipple Forum.

I’ve had the following questions asked about the Burke whistles and I thought anyone interested in them would also like to know.

“I am looking at your whistles and wondering what year were they made?
I am curious as to why you got both tubes for all of your whistles, did you use both tubes? I haven’t used one with a thumb whole before.”

All four Burkes the DBN, CBN, Bb and DLAPV are Michael’s latest design and were purchased from him in the Fall of last year (2010 and I still have the invoice if anyone needs confirmation). The second set of four bores/barrels with thumbholes were purchased from Michael in February 2011.

Like most whistle players I was hesitant to try the thumbhole, but once I did I was sold. I converted 13 of my own inexpensive whistles, but purchased new bores for the Burkes and had the maker add the thumbhole in the case of the ONYX and the DX203.

I know there are many half-holing purists, but the difference in sound quality both in pitch accuracy and solidness between a cross-fingered C natural and a Cnat with the thumbhole is very significant. Of all 20 whistles that I have with the thumbhole only on the Parks Every was there no significant improvement.

Therefore with two barrels for each Burke one has the best of both worlds.

BTW the brass Burkes have never been polished. I prefer the natural brass look, but rest assured that they will gleam if one desires.

I’ve added the Burke Low D and Onyx Low D onto eBay.

Just added the word “Tin” to “Whistle” making them much easier to find on eBay.

I also had an inquiry concerning US Customs. Here from my favourite whistle retailer in Canada is the answer:

“Burke whistles are made in the USA and under the NAFTA agreement
there should be no customs charges on instruments crossing the border from
USA or Canada. I have attached the form that we attach to our
shipments that are going to the USA. When you print out the form just cut off
the Customs Broker’s information otherwise the customs figure that it is going
through the broker and you do not want that, as you are doing the paperwork yourself.
As for the other whistles, depending on where they are made you can use the form,
or declare them to the full value as you will want your insurance.
You can mark it as a gift as well because you are not a business.”
