I’ve always loved this tune, a classic for the UPs for sure and am finally venturing to give it a go. But what version to tackle? I have Pat Mitchell’s transcription of Ennis’ in the wonderful NPU book. But I think a 5 part version is more popular?
Is it a common session tune, and if so, is there a favoured version?
And hey, maybe a topic for another thread but any tips on the Ennis trill which he makes heavy use of?
Ennis also has a cool ornament from Cnat to C sharp, well fitted to such a modal tune.
I always thought this was a great one to play along with once you got it. One of my favorite albums has a track of her playing this tune with some nice backing.
As “Cunla” was the first track on the first Planxty record I ever bought, and thus my introduction to the uilleann pipes, I have always loved the tune. Besides Liam O’Flynn’s version, I really like the five-part setting in O’Neill’s 1001 Gems, #260 in my copy, but in my experience lots of other players don’t know that setting so it’s more of a performance piece or (more usually) one to play only for my own pleasure.
Not really , I remember the lyrics to songs i was mad keen on in the 70’s !! And it could have been 35 years ago . One of the first tunes i learnt id say along with abunch of mixolydian tunes . Could have been planxty also
