Found $, now which whistle do I need?

After work today I tackled cleaning my pantry, found an prize envelope from a dog
show that had to be from at least 12 yrs ago, since I know that Bigun(Ch. Buffalo Drumnacoub) won it in the Veteran’s Class at a specialty.I’d never opened it!$$!!! So immediately I started yelling at my husband- I’m getting a new whistle!!!

I like to play with some folks (couple of fiddlers and a guitar, and possibly a shuttle pipe on occasion, and a double bass and guitar.

I’ve got a Laughing Whistle Sop.D, an old brass Gen.C, a Dixon Low D that I use most with playing with them. I’m ordering a Burke Brass Pro Session(I listened to lots of clips and decided I like their sound) for playing with them since they complain that they can’t hear the laughing whistle.Hope that’ll work. I ordered a Dixon Bflat last week to play along with a record.

My inclination is to get an A since the shuttlepipes are in A.

What do ya’ll think I need? In thinking of being able to play with other folks? (I’ve also got a Gen nickle D that is ok but a bit off on the higher octave, a Gen nickle Eflat that I love, and a Gen Bflat that needs to be tweaked and an old Clarke that I never play, don’t like the breathy sound.)

An A would be a good choice, as would a low-G. I mention the G because the Water Weasel G is such an exceptional whistle for a reasonable price (about $80). There has been a recent discussion of A whistles, where you’ll get some good suggestions if you decide you’re looking for one.

But the shuttlepipes are one octave of A mixolydian (or A to A in the key of D) so the best whistle to play with that instrument would be a D!

Cheers,

“found $$…”

Well Cowtime,

take just one of these $$ , put in an enveloppe and send it to me for the Ralph Cook low D lottery.

(see “whistle Lottery” thread further down)

Otter

Cowtime: I own a Ralph Cook low D. As a collector’s item and as a truly playable instrument, it is worth $1 of your bucks to enter Otter’s lottery…

I feel an A is a good choice for anyone who uses a D whistle, regularly. The difference in timbre and depth makes old D tunes new and gives nice new keys to work on. I play Burke and Hoover aluminum A’s. The Hoover is significantly less expensive than the Burke, but IMHO, is of equal quality in all regards…They are both winners…

Cheers and good luck with your choice.

Byll,
Thanks for the good word on the Ralph Cook Low D.
This excellent whistle being now out of production, I should have mentioned the fact that it is now a COLLECTOR’S ITEM in my original lottery post…

I will never get a job at NPR because I make a pretty lousy fundraiser !!!
