Curious...

Hey,everybody!
I just came into a bit of money, and am thinking of putting it into a can and saving for something. I am interested in conical whistles. I would like your opinions.

I have a Burke in D; would you advise me to save for a Copeland? Would there be enough difference in sound quality to justify the bucks?

Whistler’s review said the Copeland is a “wild horse of a whistle and must be tamed.” I’m not much of a wild horse rider, and I don’t like paying for windows I’ve blown out with high As and Bs (not to mention eardrums)!

I also read somewhere that Copelands had been “dumbed down.” Does that mean it’s an easier “horse” to ride?

I am interested in the Copeland because its a conical whistle, and I like the sound of my good old Clarke original (except for air requirements). Should I try a Freeman tweaked Shaw instead of a Copeland?
I don’t want a lot of repetition in my whistles, and I need to know if buying another D, even a Copeland, would be worth it.

Thanks! Kelly

I have heard that Copelands being made now are excellent.

I’ve heard that Copelands are pretty loud, if that’s a consideration.

I love conical whistles too but Copelands are way out of my budget. I wish those laughing whistles were still being made.

Typically, yes, but not all of them are.

If you love your Burke, I’d say stick with it and save your money for something in a different key. Maybe even another Burke.

Aren’t Bleazey’s conical?

Sure wouldn’t underestimate the Burke.
It’s the whistle of choice for lots of good people.

I say, live a little! Copelands are wonderful and totally unique sounding whistles. You’ve already said you like conical bore whistles, and nothing sounds more conical than a Copeland. IMO, the Burkes and Copelands are about as different as whistles get, in many ways, and you owe it to yourself to try different flavors, I mean do you really want to go through life having only eaten Vanilla Ice Cream???

Hey, Carol has a wonderful Copeland D for sale used here: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=42479&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I see she has also posted a very nice soundclip of it on the last page of that thread.

Maybe you don’t need to save up any additional money after all - if you buy used?

Thanks, all, for your replies–they were very helpful.
Loren, I’m sure you’re right about the difference in sound–that’s what made me curious in the first place.
But like King Friday, I have to face reality; even with the funds I picked up, even a used Copeland is out of range–WAY out!
Blackhawk, you know my problem well–my sensitive ears wouldn’t take a whistle much louder than a Burke.
Paul and Jim, you’re absolutely right–all I’m doing is WHOAing myself into discontentment. I DO love my Burke!
I’ve GOT to get a handle on this WHOA!

…by the way, what do you think about Overtons?

NO–don’t tell me!

I HAVE good whistles…I HAVE good whistles…I HAVE good whistles…
