Hi Spider, been playing my delrin Paddy Ward D/Eb combo quite a bit at the house and find its just too incredible a flute to think of parting with. I see that Doc has one of each at his store, you sure couldn’t go wrong with an investment there. Anyway , all the best in your search, I know I like having a delrin flute around. This three-day weekend we go to Elkhorn Hot Springs in SW Montana for x-country sking, downhill, snowshoeing, etc, and the cabins are very rustic with wood burning stoves. The dryness, wild temp swings and dogs make for a questionable environment for my blackwood flute(s) and the Paddy Ward is just the ticket. I have had the M&E and loved it, wish I still had it, and have tried a couple Jon C’s which were very fine instruments, any way you go, you are in for a treat. Best, D.
Yes, Michael, I did have a M&E original model; and in fact, with two headjoints-the regular embouchure hole and one Michael Cronnolly made for me with a larger embouchure and including the cut-away on the far side of the hole.
It was a very nice flute with the regular head, and had more power with the new head. I sold it pretty cheaply too, and the same with my Seery! But, I did prefer the Seery sound better overall. I would however like to see what the M&E Rudall is all about, since it has had many favorable reviews; more so than the original, which I thought was an excellent flute anyway.
Don’t know what I’ll end up with, but I’m glad polymer flutes are around, just not enough of them, it seems!
Too bad you’re not near me - I’d gladly let you try my M&E R&R (you could even play with the keys if you’d like!), but there’s no way I’m selling her.
I’ve owned both Seery and the R&R model M&E and like them both. I’ve heard another player with the standard M&E as well, and I prefer the R&R and Seery much more (and the player was good so it wasn’t him).
Thanks, Eric-the keys would probably get in my way-I’m used to a clear playing field!
I’m not a session player, so volume isn’t my thing-but tone is, and I liked the M&E original for the tone as it sounded to me, but just preferred the open Seery sound more.
I know the M&E RR has a lot going for it; so the many favorable reviews have told the story-there’s no denying that. One day I will find out what it’s all about, along with some other Rudalls-9 million fluters can’t be all wrong!
I’ve owned the M&E original and the R&R, the R&R is much nicer and can take whatever you throw at it…I’d personally go with Jon C. delrin, even though he will probably sob, but after the fit you will have an incredible and indestructable flute.
