I own one of these, and got it from E-Bay, a well. This one is very attractive, though; mine is entirely of a darker wood (plum wood, I think).
These are not easy to play (at least not for me). Took me forever just to get a sound out of it; learning tunes is a slow process. A very nice sound, though, once you get over the lengthy learning-curve.

It appears this can only be played by people with 12 fingers or very long thumbs
Yeah, you sit on the ground and cross your feet 'cause you need them toes for the low notes!

Herbivore, how’s the embouchure applied? Anything like the ney?
Yep, quite like the ney, although players of kaval seem to hold the instrument more horizontally than do ney players. There’s a webpage here:
http://www.robertsnider.com/Kavals/
which includes a “Beginner’s Manual” for playing. I found getting the embouchure to be tricky business, and hit-or-miss for a long time.
The instrument pictured in the E-Bay auction in this thread is one of the prettier ones I’ve seen.
Best,
Aaron
