For Sale:Low whistles [SOLD]

Hi People,

I’ve determined that I NEED a wooden flute! So, some whistles must roll!

  1. [SOLD] Bernard Overton Low C, non-tunable, a beast(not really)! Best played by a person who is very comfortable with the low D span and pipers’s grip. This makes you feel like you felt when you first picked up a low D and had to stretch those fingers! This one, just a little more. Diameter is slightly larger than an Overton Low D. But it has its rewards: big, booming sound, with a soft edge(airy). And after you get comfortable with the stretch, it’s fine. Likes to be played aggessively-good amount of back pressure, if you are not used to it. Can be played quieter also, and still has a lovely softer tone then, but with that low presence. Original owner’s initials stamped on back of fipple end smoothly(not near where your lips are), and a mark on top of metal over windway(also smooth, and small). I just checked this with my computer based tuner, and it seems to be in tune with itself quite well, but a tad sharp through the scale. I didn’t find this out until just now. If you play by yourself, or with an instrument that can be tuned, it should be no problem. I don’t know, but I would think that Bernard or Colin might be able to fix this if it is a problem to you. Overall in excellent + condition, no other significant marks. You can purchase it for what I paid, $160 plus insured shipping of $8 in USA. A bargain beast! With Bernard’s felt bag.

  2. [SOLD] Chieftain Old Style Gold Low D, non-tunable. A beastie! I didn’t think I would ever sell this special whistle, but, things change! Great mellow and powerful tone. Similar airy tone like Overton Low C, but different mellowness, a little punchier volume wise, but also can be played softly. Very heavy, solid brass, weighs in at 1lb! Lots of personality, very expressive, like the Overton. Has moderate back pressure also, slightly less than Overton, but close-this has narrower windway than regular OS Chieftains. Slightly wider spread on bottom holes than regular Overton Low D, but quite managable for average hands. In tune with itself and the meter. Plays best when fully warm (actually that is with any whistle), which takes a little longer with the heavy brass. Also in excellent + condition, no marks to speak of. Price $150 plus $10 insured shipping in USA(it’s heavy!) A great whistle. Even if Phil does produce them again, they won’t sound the same, and will be much more expensive. Only about 100 of these low Ds were produced according to Phil Hardy.

  3. [SOLD] Burke Composite Low D Pro, tunable, old style(non o-ring tuning) made in 2/2000. Another special whistle. I just discovered these recently, and here again, I didn’t think I would sell this one either, until I got the newer version for Christmas from my wife. And I would keep both, if I didn’t have other financial obligations. A very sweet, woody, flutey tone, on the quieter side, but still has some good presence when blown harder. Not a session whistle, unless you like to be in the mix(can be good). A very personal, quiet time whistle for me. Very responsive, and more pure toned than not, and as lightweight a whistle as you are likely to find. NO back pressure compared to the others, a very easy blow. The newer version is very nice too, but bulkier, a hair less responsive maybe, and a little louder in the lower notes, and more chiffy. Either is a geat whistle, and I will miss this one! Well in tune also. The finish on these composites is not smooth like metal whistles. It is smooth to the touch, but there are blotchy patches or like grain in the bakelite. Not unattractive, but different if you haven’t seen them before. I think it makes it look more of the earth, and gives it character. But, the sound is what you’ll love! It can be yours for $150 shipped in the USA.

I have these whistles still available, and have reduced prices on all. All are very good whistles(no tweaking needed), no problems, play well, condition excellent to like new. All include shipping in the continental US. Thanks for looking!

[SOLD] Kerry Low D, excellent condition $50

[SOLD] True-Tone Highland Pipes long practice chanter, poly w/book $50

I hate to see them go, but, time to move on, in another musical direction with the flute. No, I’m not giving up on whistles, just downsizing!

I can take a PayPal payment, if it doesn’t use a credit card, or a Postal Money Order works well, thanks.

Email me, or PM with your interests. Thank You!

I have removed the Overton from the sale, because I was thinking about it being sharp, and checked it again when it was fully warm, and found it to be 25% sharp by my meter(AP guitar tuner download on my computer, which I checked and is accurate).

As I said, the previous owner didn’t tell me about this when I bought it, and I just checked it briefly before I put it up for sale, and it wasn’t fully warm when I checked.

And now, thinking about a solution to fix the problem, material has to be added to the length of the whistle, or add a tuning slide to it. Which would have to be done by Overton to be an appropriate repair.

Sorry for putting it up without thinking too much about it, it shouldn’t be your problem, even at that low price!

Thanks for your understanding.

Let’s suppose a person just wants to play it at home for their own personal enjoyment.

I rarely, if ever, venture out to play with others, but still play my tunes each and every evening.
And I don’t know that I can even “tell” if my instruments are sharp or flat, given that context!

Best wishes on the sale of these nice whistles!

MAry

Hi Mary,

I couldn’t tell either(only had it a short time), because I play at home too, and usually I just improvise or learn tunes from memory. But, if someone tries to play along with a recording, or another instrument, especially one that can’t be tuned, or is a big deal to tune, like an autoharp or a harp, or an accordian, etc., it could be a problem.

This limits the usage of a not inexpensive whistle; you have no options other than a quick fix of attaching a round or two of tape on the end of the tube to temporarily fix the sharpness. If it were tunable, it would be easy to remedy!

I will take offers on this, as it will make a good whistle for someone, as long as they understand its limitations.

Email or PM with your offer, thanks.

Last Call!@!@! Thank you!

[SOLD] I had removed the Overton from sale, but I put it back up, as I will take offers on it now. It is a great sounding whistle, it’s just somewhat (25%) sharp in its tuning to the meter, throughout the scale.

If you understand its limitations, and that is OK with you, then I will take offers. I couldn’t tell it was off, only having it a short while. I wasn’t told about it when I bought it, which was $160 plus shipping. It is a big savings from a new Overton, and if you play alone, and not to recordings, it would be fine, as it doesn’t sound off, and it is in tune with itself very well. Or if someone can tune to you, it’s also fine.

I have written to Colin Goldie about repairing it, and we will be discussing it shortly to see what can be done.

Email me with offers over [SOLD] if interested, thank you.
