Does anyone out there know of someone who could/would fit Bohem keys to the foot joint of my Terry McGee flute?
Cheers
James.
I’ll start with my usual caveat: there’ll be more knowledgeable people along in a minute. ![]()
Assuming you’ve got a standard, 6-key, long-footed D flute, ie one with two holes but no keys below the Eb on the footjoint, I’m not sure it works to just put keys on. I know it’s been said to me before (by a flutemaker) that the positioning of the two holes is different for a flute where keys are not intended from one where it’s been designed to have C and C# footjoint keys. Said flutemaker would therefore make a whole new footjoint rather than put keys on the existing footjoint.
But it might be different for different flute makers. Have you found anyone who says they can do it? What has Terry said about it?
G’day Jim,
Terry’s flutes are certainly a cracker of a horn aren’t they!!! ![]()
You can definitely enquire of Maurice Reviol in New Zealand (http://www.reviol.co.nz) as I’ve heard nothing but praise about his craftsmanship regards Böhm style key work.
My 2 cents worth anyhow……..
Not claiming anything of the sort, but…
I know it’s been said to me before (by a flutemaker) that the positioning of the two holes is different for a flute where keys are not intended from one where it’s been designed to have C and C# footjoint keys.
I think it depends on the flutemaker, because Dave Copley told me his holes were in the same place and we even discussed making the foot joint with blocks (for the old-style keys) but no keys before I decided not to.
What has Terry said about it?
Dunno, but…
‘The Long D Foot looks like the C foot on the original 19th century flutes, but has no keys, just the holes where the keys would have been. I rework the bore of the Long D foot to prevent it weakening the low D as the C foot can do.’
Haven’t contacted Terry about it. I know he’s mad busy and don’t think he’d take it on.
It is a six key. And it is fabulous. Also has carefully made tone holes on the foot joint that look ready to accept keys. I’m 99% plus, sure they’re good for it. But confirmation from Terry would be a must before continuing with the project.
Thanks for your responses.

Reviol can pretty much do anything.
Hup is correct, Maurice Reviol can do just about anything, and might add, extremely well. About 5 days ago I just received back from Maurice my new Garry Somers, 5 piece Pratten, Delrin flute, with the metal tuning slide. I asked Maurice if he could/ would consider putting 8 keys on it, and he agreed to do so. He had to make a few modifications to add the C and C# keys to the foot. For example, he had to put larger cups on to properly cover the larger “tone holes” on the foot. In addition, he had to remove 5mm off of the end of the foot, and ream out the end portion of the foot to bring the C# into pitch. It is a beautiful instrument, looks great and sounds great, even though I’m playing it. BTW, I bought the Somers key-less flute this August, new from Garry. He makes a really nice flute and inexpensive at that. Both of these men are master craftsmen in my opinion, and are great to deal with. So, in answer to your question, can it be done? Yup, and I have the proof right in front of me.
