I am hoping to get 3 keys applied to a Garry Somers R&R style Delrin flute and have been given the name of a key maker in New Zealand, Reviol.
Has anyone had this done and have you any comments about it ?
Thank you,
MC

I just had six keys put on my Martin Doyle flute by Maurice Reviol. He was a pleasure to deal with and I am very happy with the results. The are beautifully made, fall easily under the fingers, and are spot on in terms of intonation. He was suggested on Martin’s website for post mounted instead of block mounted keys. I know of two professionals who have Doyles with Reviol keys. I can’t tell you how well your Somers will turn out. I would contact Maurice and ask his opinion.
I’d also suggest Maurice Reviol. The only thing you should check is whether he’s fond of working with Delrin or not.
Thanks for the helpful replies - all good advice.
Maurice put a lovely Eb key on my delrin shannon.
I can also vouch for Maurice. Been doing business with him for some years now. Good man, good keywork.
Maurice added 6 keys to my Delrin Gallagher, i have to say…my favorite keywork…plus a pleasure to work with him.
Reviol does excellent keywork. I’ve had a number of flutes keyed by him and he’s a pleasure with whom to deal. Hopefully he doesn’t mind working with delrin.
Thank you for all the positive replies
Anybody know someone good who does this in the usa?
It’s all about price. I couldn’t find anyone in the US who was more cost effective than Maurice (even including the outrageous shipping to NZ). Plus, Maurice does great keys with lots of options to fit anyone’s needs.

I wonder if John Gallagher does this.
i guess it needs to be someone who makes post mounted keys
Usually. It’s a bigger job to graft on blocks and turn them down. Probably many band instrument technicians have the chops to make or adapt keys, but I usually notice them making replacements rather than determining hole placement, etc. Maurice just happens to have the expertise and experience to handle a number of aspects of the work. He would certainly be my choice for bassoon repair or restoration.
Hi Don Morgan,
I am replying to the email you sent via this notice board (I didnt realise I could be directly emailed when I joined Chiff and Fipple) - I have changed that setting - I hope you dont mind .
I have a Rudall & Rose style Garry Somers Delrin flute, which I love. I share it with my daughter so I plan to get a second one for the keys . I am ordering it via a flute teacher in Ireland and hope to have it sometime in September. I am hoping to send it straight away to Maurice Reviol to get the 3 keys done (f nat, g sharp and c nat)- so realistically it could be 2-3 months before I have it back - allowing for shipping etc. It seems a bit extreme to have to send it to New Zealand to get this done but all the reviews of Reviol’s work are very positive and it appears no one else closer to home puts keys on delrin flutes.
I will let you know how I get on (via this board) . It will probably be November / December so watch this space.
Bye for now,
M.
No problem. I will indeed keep an eye on your post. My guess is that you’ll be most pleased with the outcome. When it is finished, give some consideration to posting some photos if you can. I suspect that others on C and F might be interested. ![]()
Cheers,
Don Morgan.
