Hello, I’ve been considering trying to make a 4 part Irish flute recently, but I don’t own a good example. Can somebody please give me some lengths for blanks or internal bores? I have all of the tools already, I just need to know the lengths and inside bores.
It’s a big question, Potato, but this page might give you some idea of what the body bores of some well known original period flutes look like. Note the heads are not shown here, they are cylindrical and would be off to the left of these curves.
Note that you can spot where body sections join, as there is almost always a discontinuity there. Don’t confuse those with body lengths though, as there are tenon and socket joints involved.
It would be good if you could identify the kind of Irish flute you have in mind. EG, I make 5 different models, ranging from the large bore, large hole Prattens down to the smaller bore, small holes Grey Larsen Preferred. And three sizes of Rudall based flutes in between.
