i was playing a walton D whistle today, and i decided to try to tweak it. needless to say, i killed it. so i had an extra body lying around. i put a D generation head on it, and did a basic sticky tack in the cavity beneath the windway, and it’s great! the tone is really clear, the high a and b do not hurt my ears, like they do on the generation, and it jumps the octave effortlessly. for the first time, i can jump up and down the octave on the whistle as easily as i do on the flute. i like this combination way better than having the generation (slightly tweaked) head on the generation body.
has anybody tried this combination? what is everyone’s favorite?
No, but I did the same with the cavity under the windway, and also I cut out redundant plastic on the inside. The head is easily removable from the body by putting it in hot water (boil the water and let it cool down for half a minute, then put the whistle with the head down in for half a minute). I also glued a little piece of very thin copper at the end of the windway so the air is cut sharper. It makes very much difference altogether and my generation has become quite a whistle. As a matter of fact, I did the same with my gen Bb and it sounds as good as an expensive whistle now. I really love it now and it’s in tune and much less chiffy
can you show a picture or have more detail about the copper? i didnt touch the windway on mine. it seems to be pretty clear. i did a lot with the windway on the one i ruined today! so i figured best play it safe, as i have no more expendable whistles on hand.
Well, it’s tone is now more pure and steady. The Sindt has also the same characteristics, sounding traditional but more perfected in tune and sound than eg. the Gen. I’ve got 3 improved Gens now, D, Bb and high G
Ah OK, breathiness then. A nice chirpy chiff is something I look for as a positive quality in a Generation, and not something I’d want to engineer out!
Tweaked Generation red top on a Generation Eb nickel body. Best whistle I have and the most fun to play. Amazing pure, round tone and dead-on accurate. Upper register just sings into the 3rd octave. It’s a shame I don’t get many opportunities to use it other than with the band on a few tunes. But play it all the time at home.
