Best Frankenstein Whistle

Short of major tweeks, I was wondering what types of head replacements people have tried on differnt tubes, and how they work.

Like many here, I have a bunch of whistles that don’t get played as often as others, and I was thinking about switching things around on some.

Any suggestions…?

Thanks,

Kerry

Well, I hate to toot my own GenSindt (yeah, right), but have you seen this?

One of my favorite whistles is a D Frankenwhistle that I got from someone on the board. I think it’s an LBW head on some unidentified brass body. She called it “the poor man’s Sindt.” (Beth, do you remember what that body was?) It’s a GREAT whistle.

I also have a Bb FrakenGen, which is a red head on a nickle body and I like it a lot.

I have an Oak with a tweaked Acorn fipple that is flute like and loud..very nice. Also an Oak with LBW fipple (tweaked) this is very smooth. The oddest whistle in my quiver is a Generation Folk barrel with a severely tweaked Feadog fipple. This whisle is so quiet I can hardly hear it when I play it in the car (diesel) with the engine running. Breath requirement is so low I almost have to suck.

Had a really old Generation, good worn-in body, but cracked fipple. Ordered a O’Briain and transplanted the head on old Gen body. Wow!

I had a completely useless Feadog (mark II), or so I thought, until I got an LBW that was horrendously out of tune. I put the LBW head on the Feadog body and it made a very nice whistle. The spare parts made a monstrosity that even my 4 year old won’t play.

I also put an O’Briain-Feadog head on a Gen D body. The most obvious improvements over the original body (Feadog) are a stronger 1st octave and a purer 2nd octave. I think it really does deserve a “Wow!”

The O’Briain Eb is a ready-made Frankenstein whistle. It comes with the O’Briain-Feadog head on a Gen body (modified to improve intonation). It’s a great little whistle in every way.

Best frankenwhistle I made was a first generation feadog head on an Oak tube. Sweet but not flutey, medium-low volume. Oak bodies make great experimentation pieces, well constructed.

Talking of Fronkenstine lows…

Funny this thread was started by one nicked Kerry…

I have an LBW head on an Oak D body. It’s really nice. All I did to the LBW head is put blue tack under the windway. I also have an old Oak (20 or more yrs old)on which I tried the LBW head. It worked OK but the new Oak body plays more in tune. The new barrel is shorter and the holes are different from the old one. Now, if they could just fix their toxic mouthpiece problem this would be an excellent whistle. I wonder how Mack’s whitecaps would sound on an Oak.

Clare mouthpiece on a Gen body. Also, a Clare mouthpiece on a Doolin body.
