Ciaran MacMathuna did his last-ever Sunday morning show on RTE this morning. Never again will I wake up to the sound of the Swan Teasmade gurgling away to the accompaniment of his dulcet tones. I won’t miss some of those near-doggerel poems that he or his “ladies” sometimes read out, or the ceili band tracks, but he played a lot of good stuff and he’s done sterling work for Irish music over the decades. He must be over 80 by now, and though I wish him a very happy well-deserved retirement, I’m gonna miss him!
