Fabricating a Flute Case Interior

I recently picked up a Flute without a case.
I actually have a compact box made of wood that has a clasp on it. I would like to create an interior in it to accept the Flute.
Any recommendations on what to use material wise? for the actual backing? Soft Foam, Styrofoam or something else?
And then for the fabric what material would you suggest?
And then any tips for making it
I can pick up a wood Flute box on eBay, but I’d like to just see if I could make one
Thanks in advance

If I were going to replicate something like the Northwind French-style case I keep my flute in, I’d use a solid block of lightweight wood like basswood or even balsa for the interior. Trimmed to the right shape and thickness, allowing for a tiny amount of added thickness from the cloth that will be added to cover.

Then I’d use a router or Dremel tool to carve out the channels for the flute, again allowing for a little extra thickness once it’s covered with cloth. You could even use hand tools to carve it out if you’re good with a chisel and scrapers. Basswood is easy to carve.

For the cloth covering I’d use plush velvet glued to the wood. Doesn’t need to be very thick, there isn’t much actual padding in the velvet cloth in a Northwind case. The protection is in the close fit where nothing can move around, and the rigid basswood case.

Awesome, I’m going to investigate the Balsa wood ! Made Balsa wood Model Airplanes way back when
