Specifically, the Casey Burns Folk flute has a longest single section of approx 39 cm. I don’t want a box that is 50cmx25cmx8cm - I would ideally, for this flute, want one with internal dimensions of about 40cmx10cmx5cm.
Poker chip boxes are an option, but the wooden ones seem to be few and far between, and/or overpriced and/or too wide. I don’t really want one of the aluminium ones. These boxes also tend to be a bit big in the two shorter dimensions and short in the long dimension.
I have found several companies which will make them to measure in lots of 100 plus… Not quite what I am after either!
I also have a Forbes Christie (Windward Flutes) keyless on the way with a Pratten style single body joint - I’ll be looking for a case for this too. I don’t have the flute at the moment (he’s adding rings for me), so I am not sure what the maximum length would be for this one. I played this flute a lot at Boxwood and fell for it completely. I plan to use it for sessions.
I am very interested in trying to keep the overall size of the cases down to not much bigger than the flutes - it works with Boehm flutes, so why should I need a suitcase for a Wooden flute? The case with my McGee GLP is a good example of what things should be like.
Sources elsewhere in Europe with reasonable P&P would also be useful.
I’m looking for the same. I need a case suitable for my eight-keyed Reviol with the one-piece body. So a Pratten-style flute case should fit. I once saw this Northwind flute case (which is distributed by Hammy Hamilton) on a session which is a very nice option, but with a very high price (>200€ IIRC).
I might look into making wooden boxes if I find a wood seller with reasonable prices near me…
The Northwind case is lovely, but it does cost a lot.
You can buy a Boehm flute case cheaply enough. Used they go for about €15/$20. Most of these have an internal stretch of about 39-40cm. Long enough for most single-center flutes.
Carefully take off the interior cloth and you’ll find some throwaway plastic forms meant for a Boehm flute. You can replace these with foam that you form to fit your flute, or use pieces of wood to make compartments. Glue the cloth back on, and you’ll have a great flute case for few dollars.
Some Boehm flute cases use foam form-inserts to begin with, rather than the plastic forms. In this case you only have to form the foam to fit your flute by applying finger pressure.
Good luck.
Desi Seery makes a wooden case for his flutes. As they are Prattens, it should fit. The price is 100€ and he is in Bray, Ireland. I was in Bray three days ago. If I had knew this earlier…
