Even the great ones....

I double post this since not every one seeks out the YouTube postings.

Even the great players have their own “moves” that are quite unorthodox…but if the sound is good, what they hey.

Great clip of Kevin Ryan playing at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO7vKUo6YFY

Notice at 1:05 how Kevin uses the upper C key to roll his high As.

I used to do this, too…my left hand ring finger was too weak and undeveloped to properly roll that A.

other option on the high A instead of the C key: (will not work for lower A)
X X O O O O bell note
O X O O O O cut
X X O O O O bell note
X X O X X O tap
X X O O O O bell note

I’ve used that one when the left hand gets tired on a tune with heavy amounts of A, such as the High Reel.

I’m doing exactly the same for rolling B’s. I used to roll A’s that way, too, but I learned to do real A rolls after a while.

Hmmm … lovely flute playing. Am I the only one, though? I had to turn it off not long after the guitar came in - it was, basically, out of time and out of tune. Odd … There was something funny about the sound quality though, and I’m wondering if that could have made things worse?

Nice clip. “Whatever works” I think is the phrase.

It reminded me, I have to text Kevin and ask how he’s doing. He was very ill last time he was here a week or so ago. I didn’t get a chance to catch up with him because I was out in the woods, but my fiance saw the gig.

Stomach disorders are usually a sign of not having drunk enough
whisky

Hypersensitive old b… I just mentally blank guitars anyway, pretty much, unless noticeably good/enhancing - as in I just didn’t really notice him. Lovely fluting though - and as a nice contrast to another recent posting of pipers’ hold players, a very stylish example of Rockstro hold done well, even including having the foot keys in playable position, not turned away!

I too noticed something odd about the sound - the flute is very clear/prominent - and realised the flute at least is miked (strap or clip on on the head) and the sound track of this video is from the mixing desk, not the ambient sound in the room. I couldn’t readily see pick-ups on the fiddle or guitar, but would assume they too are wired in.

interesting , that use of the c key for the roll , i wondered what he was doing , until i returned to the post and read it again . i’ll be up at the crack of noon , to try that move .

and yes Jem , i agree with you , that chap seems to be overly sensitive . :stuck_out_tongue: , but i suspect he is a closet fiddle player

what the guitarist is doing , is playing behind the beat , and that’s nice when you are trying to get into the tune with someone .
the sound was good for me , but then i’m using a Mac ( smirk/sneer)

the only thing i found wrong , was the spelling of Carmel’s name , other than that , it was a deadly buzz .

thanks for the link David .

Gorgeous. And most edifying. Never tried the C natural alternative – my A rolls are pretty dodgy so I think I’ll study on that. Anything for better A rolls. Thanks, David!

L2? (Which is what I do anyway…)

I’d use the C key if I wanted a C nat cut on B, though - sometimes one does…even though cuts are usually not pitch-specific, I think there are times when keeping them within the mode can be beneficial, so one might wish to have a C nat, not a C# cutting one’s Bs (or As, indeed)… On my R&R I find the extra R1 touch for the Bb key handy for rolls on A in flat keys, e.g. in Twopenny Jig.

indeed Jem
but depends on the caliber of the sound you seek.
The Bb touch would roll you downward on the B (and partly up on the A)
The C key almost gives it a Tansey-esque sound going the full third

I’m hoping it’s a secret flute player trick for “rollier” sounding A rolls; mine tend to be too fast and smooth and thus kind of feathery. Drives me nuts, trying to figure out why the boys can do such nice well-defined ones!

Depending on a variety of things (speed, tune, frequency of A rolls (Jolly Tinker’s rife with them), timing, internal rhythm and whether I’m playing like a moron or not  ), I either roll with L2 or L1; L1 seems to “pop” them more, especially on what I call “slow” or “even” rolls. In fact, L1 makes me happier me overall; my L2 finger seems to be a special-needs child with days when it just doesn’t work (that’s what a lifetime with horses will do to you). L2 does work better when I flat-finger, oddly enough.

But I’d REALLY like to use R1 – I’m thinking venting with the C might help me get closer to the sound and internal rhythm I’m after, at least in certain situations.

You might indeed be the only one. Noel Ryan is very well thought of around Clare, where believe it or not they know a thing or two about the music, and clearly was invited by these two top-drawer musicians to be there with them on the day. I don’t hear what you’re talking about at all, and I suspect Carmel and Kevin didn’t either.

Rob

Oh, I forgot to mention that. I thought the guitar playing was grand and did a nice job lifting the music without getting too driving. But then again I live in the land of the duelling banjos …

You say that like it’s a bad thing. (I mean one’s gonna lose, right?).

! There’s a heartening thought

The clip is great!! They might not have been wired tight, but it has a great feel and lift to it. I thought it was spot on in the appeal department.

Sorry Rob. Didn’t mean to offend. Or even to be critical. At least not of the musician. There was just something wrong with how that particular clip sounded to me, is all. I reckon Jem may have hit it on the head - maybe some different technique used to record the flute from the guitar or something … Mind you, if I had wanted to be critical, I certainly wouldn’t be put off because someone’s from Clare, where they “know a thing or two about the music” or because they were an ‘expert’ or something. I don’t see why that should stop me, or anyone else, from having an opinion.

Anyway, there you go. I’ll have to listen to the whole clip now … 'cos Troy wants something …

Oh , NOW you your’e going to listen to the whole clip ?

and David , would you have the names of those tunes? it’s just that my personal tune research assistant hasn’t gotten back to me yet .

the second tune , i played along with it , but i come up with different moves in the phrasing , so i’m sure i have a version buried in my mind . i think i’d like to revisit it .
(the tune , that is . not my mind , that’s a lonely place..)

Cathy , i like the "rollier " bit !

and not wired tight ? Jaysus , there’s a bank of lights roasting you , and kickass camera pointing at you , and your’e hooked directly into a recording system that is picking up your breakfast digesting .
i’d say they were wired tight .

Just to “Clare-ify,” if you’ll pardon the pun, I was hardly offended since it wasn’t my personal guitar-playing on the block. I was merely answering your question, especially since I don’t hear the out of time/out of tune thing you mentioned. Any road, when there is a question on something like that I’m inclined to assume that the lads knew what they were doing.

Rob

Thanks for the tune names, MT. I had the first but have never heard the second. They make a nice set.
