If you’re worried about the origin of the instrument, why not ask the seller for more information (when it was made, anything stamped on it, etc), then check with Kirk Lynch himself.

It’s definately a Lynch set, so not to worry about that. The chanter is nearly identical to mine.

However, it does look to be missing the brass ferrule at the bottom of the chanter and (from what I can see) the brass fitting for the blow stock that ties into the bag. Check with the buyer on that.

I have seen these parts simply come unglued. If he has the parts it would take less than 2 minutes to make it good as new with a little epoxy.

I’m not certain I would any variety of glue for this. :open_mouth:

Agreed, do not use ‘permanent’ or semi-permanent glues on pipes!

There are very few places where epoxy makes any sense. I have seen lots of sets damaged by misuse of epoxy, however.

Loose ferrules should be affixed with unwaxed thread, in the majority of cases. Realize that wood does move with the seasons.

The auction seems to have been ended early with no bids. Does this mean someone bought it with “buy it now”?

Possibly…

McCarthy half set in D

Any opinions as to the maker of this set (certainly not a full set)? Don’t think that the seller knows much about it other than that its been aggressively disassembled. One one picture unfortunately and not the clearest.

Look at the size of some of the mounts! The cap on the bass reg, the chanter top and the drone switch look like they’ve come from distant worlds. I couldn’t make much out of what was left of the set. Looks like a heap of work and/or money would have to be invested and even then, the final result will probably be butt ugly.

I think that there are three regs but the set is missing some of the drone parts. keys are all removed (in the pile) and the chanter is either all metal or a metal sleeve. My understanding is that there are no stamp anywhere. The drone mount looks alot like other 19th century mounts.

The bidding has ended. Did you win?

Yes. I am hoping that at least the bellows is worth what I paid if it is all just a pile of rubbish. The pic was lousy and I didn’t get any additional shots until after the bidding. You never know if a peice of these are a diamond in the ruff, but at the price was low enough to take a risk. I would post the other pics but I don’t know how.

He says they are from the 60s but is wrong . McCarthy started making in the mid 70s, and had not long been in business with partner Doug Wilkinson when I bought a full set from them around 1978.
