My copy of Grey Larsen’s book on flute and tin whistle came in today, talk about any early Christmas present!
I’ve spent half an hour or so riffling through it and reading pieces and at first glance it seems absolutely fantastic. As someone who is going it alone with the help of online lists and the occasional workshop, this book is going to be invaluable.
It seems to be the type of book that can’t be absorbed even in a handful of readings, I imagine I’ll read it through and then keep refering back to sections of it repeatedly over the next few years. Literally.
Yup. I just got my copy, and it’s amazing. Grey is obviously a wonderfully knowledgeable and balanced musician. I’m looking forward to really digging into this book.
I think it would be great for a beginner with a couple additions:
Learn the basics of reading music. Any decent intro book would be good for this.
If you haven’t already listen to a lot of Irish flute. Get a copy of the Wooden Flute Obsession compilation and recommendations either from this board or the book.
I haven’t really gone through the book, it’s a big sucker and gonna take a while to make even a cursory pass. It seems to be “everything you ever wanted to know about Irish flute” type of book.
Well, I’m looking forward to “opening” mine on Christmas morning ~ my family is “giving” it to me for one of my gifts, along with Skip Healy’s new book/CD, and a Freeman tweaked Shaw!
I received my copy a couple of days ago, and I’m very impressed so far. Of course, I’ve not exactly read it cover to cover yet, but it seems well written and comprehensive.
