i have a hp comp laptop, is it possible for me to download firefox on it. if so, what is the website to download it? and is it a hard and long process? thank you.

The Website

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

It is not a long download unless you are on dial up.

get the following add ons as well after you have downloaded it.

Adblock Plus
CookieSafe
NoScript
Unplug
Chatzilla
MediaPlayerConnectivity

These are the ones I have found most usefull (note there are many more you can play with  ).

David

thanks davy, for some reason i knew you were the one who would answer this first  is it free?

nevermind, i downloaded it. now i have to figure out how to download all of that stuff you said. thanks davy, youare the best.

Easy

Click tools, then addons

in the box that appears, click get extensions

David

firefox is diabled for making a username at the moment. :frowning: i guess i will check in later. thanks for all the links.

just be aware - there are some sites that will not work “properly” with Firefox. Some Java code doesn’t work correctly on it. If people can’t get the chord finder on our site to work, it’s almost always due to them using Firefox.
(actually, I have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m just repeating what Tom has said, because I have no idea how to do code!!!)

i have no idea either how to do all that stuff  i just take advice from Big Davy on stuff like this, he is my computer helping buddy. i just mainly want to get on live chat again.

The good thing about firefox is that it has the ability to “spoof” other browsers like IE.Its in the tools section, you proabably need to dfownload a plug in to get it .

I use safari on the Mac, and every so often, there is a site that needs IE so I launch firefox

Hey - that’s good to know! If someone can give me the specifics, that may be something we can put as a message on the page that people seem to have problems with.

I don’t think it’s a matter of Java scripts ‘not working correctly’ in Firefox but Firefox not executing Java scripts for safety reasons. You can change your security settings or if you have the ‘No Script’ add on (temporarily) allow a site to execute scripts and all will be fine.

I have not used IE for years.

Hi missy

You can use the IE tab add on in firefox, it will deal with a lot of IE issues in firefox, but it is not a universal panacea.

David

Edited to add - your site operates in firefox with the IE tab add on.

To get it to work in firefox - go to the site in firefox, in tools click on IE tab and add the site to the list, exit IE tab and refresh the page. Firefox now accesses the site in IE mode fron now on.

Just a quick note: some sites don’t work with Firefox because they are written incorrectly.

This is not Firefox’s fault.

IE tends to implement things in non-standard ways. There used to be many websites that would only write and test for IE; fortunately, more and more sites are written correctly now so that they will display properly on any browser running on any platform.

Its not so much that sites are now written “correctly”, but that the web languages that Microsoft corrupted (Java, Javascript, XML) have bent under pressure and accepted Microsoft’s little “modifications”.

People who don’t know how to code simple HTML and use products like Front Page were unwittingly inserting Microsoft-only code into their pages. Microsoft and IE are so ubitquitous in personal computing and on the web that the Microsoft-specific code was added into later revisions of the web programming languages just to keep competing products alive.

This has not been as bad as it might sound at first, as Microsoft has made some very positive additions/extensions to these web programming languages.

Davy, I’m putting you on notice that I may be hollerin’ at you. I’ve been meaning to try out Firefox and this thread helped remind me. So…I did it. Downloaded all that you recommended, but I’m warning you, I’ll probably need help on something, knowing me. So far, all is well.

Hi cowtime

No problem. If I can help then you are welcome (even though this will probably be me   ).

Why not try Opera as well, it is free too and is good for reading the board. It is what I use to read C&F and the Poli board. There is one drawback, however, it can be flaky when posting to the forums.

David

just fy, I always find it easier to remember http://www.getfirefox.com when I want to download firefox..

I downloaded Firefox and also the e-mail client. Is there any way to import AOL favorite places and address book to these programs?

to import favorite places:
http://www.urlorg.com/help/index.html?hidd_import.htm

I don’t use AOL, so I don’t know how well that is documented.

To get your address book, you’ll need a third part program like Emailchemy
http://www.weirdkid.com/products/emailchemy/index.html

how about mozilla, are there any advantages of firefox over mozilla? (or vica versa?)
