Don't know how good these are but they certainly look nifty!

Here’s a picture of the whistle in question:

It appears to be made of clear polycarbonate.
My only problem with this is that everyone will be able to see your
spit run through the tube as you play (I know… gross… sorry).
Also, I’ve not been fond of all-plastic whistles so far.

IT’S NOT SPIT!!!

It is sometimes for me.

I have done a bit of photo tweaking to have
a better look at these whistle.

There is just something NOT RIGHT with both the
look of the whistles and the look of the site.

Are we being set-up here guys???

What’s not right about the site? It looks like ebay to me.

As for the whistles, there’s no really much there to go on by the pictures

I don’t think so. This guy has been selling whistles regularly on ebay and those who buy them seem to be satisfied. These clear things are more recent.

Maybe I am just being typically Irish in my attitude!!
(expecting the other guy to be pulling a fast one)

Has anyone tried these whistles??? - if they are in any
way as good as the EBay feedback suggests - they
represent one heck of a bargain.

This guy is definetly legit. His name is Rick Hinck, and I bought a copper Eb whistle from him a couple of weeks ago. He’s been making whistles for about a year now and (I think) has some real potential as a whistle maker. I haven’t played these plastic whistles, but the copper whistle had not only a great feel to it, but a nice and sweet tone as well. There were a couple rough edges to be worked out on the copper model I bought (I thought the tone was a little too airy, and it occassionally clogged), but after trading emails with him, I feel pretty confident that this guy will be making great whistles in no time. If anyone’s curious about the quality, I say give them a shot. My Eb is well worth more than the $12 I paid for it.

Oh, and if it would be helpful to anyone, I could post a sound clip of the Eb when I get home later, so the whistle can speak for itself, as it were.

I think some sound clilps of the whistles in question would help the site, but
seems legit otherwise. Certainly cheap enough that it wouldn’t be a very
clever scam.

Forgive me, my delicate flower. I meant to say “condensation”.
(Honestly. Trumpet players don’ t mind calling them “spit valves”.)

Yes Please!! I, for one, am always interested in hearing whistle sounds. I never ceases to amaze me how such a simple bit of plumbing can have such a variety of qualities built into it.

Please do post some samples.

You have no idea :astonished:!!! (do you?)

I know there is some spit in there.

The is the maker’s Eb copper whistle. As I stated before, there are some rough edges, but worth the purchase price, I think (and it shows some promise).

Oh, and does anyone know the name of the first tune? Thanks.

Míle maith agat Mickey.

Nice playing there boy! Sorry dont know the tune!

Unusual artifact in the sound produced by
that whistle. Seemed to have an undertone
resonance of some sort - or maybe it was
a resonance from the room or recording.

Damn well played!!!

I just got one of the polycarbonate whistles yesterday. At that price it was totally a matter of curiosity. Interesting material, but way too much ‘hiss’ in the whistle for my taste. If you blow hard enough some of the airishness leaves … but that’s too much like work!

But he does ship very fast & seems a nice enough person. If someone likes a whistle that can take being played hard … try it – it fits the bill.

Judy

So, you DO mind calling them “spit valves”?

Thanks very much for the kind words (and you too peeplj). The resonance was mostly from the whistle, though the room added to it a bit. I think if Rick cuts through that in future models, the tone will be excellent.

I do like that characteristic in my whistles (having to blow hard to get it to work), so I guess this one was right up my alley.
