It appears to be made of clear polycarbonate.
My only problem with this is that everyone will be able to see your
spit run through the tube as you play (I know… gross… sorry).
Also, I’ve not been fond of all-plastic whistles so far.
I don’t think so. This guy has been selling whistles regularly on ebay and those who buy them seem to be satisfied. These clear things are more recent.
This guy is definetly legit. His name is Rick Hinck, and I bought a copper Eb whistle from him a couple of weeks ago. He’s been making whistles for about a year now and (I think) has some real potential as a whistle maker. I haven’t played these plastic whistles, but the copper whistle had not only a great feel to it, but a nice and sweet tone as well. There were a couple rough edges to be worked out on the copper model I bought (I thought the tone was a little too airy, and it occassionally clogged), but after trading emails with him, I feel pretty confident that this guy will be making great whistles in no time. If anyone’s curious about the quality, I say give them a shot. My Eb is well worth more than the $12 I paid for it.
I think some sound clilps of the whistles in question would help the site, but
seems legit otherwise. Certainly cheap enough that it wouldn’t be a very
clever scam.
Forgive me, my delicate flower. I meant to say “condensation”.
(Honestly. Trumpet players don’ t mind calling them “spit valves”.)
Yes Please!! I, for one, am always interested in hearing whistle sounds. I never ceases to amaze me how such a simple bit of plumbing can have such a variety of qualities built into it.
The is the maker’s Eb copper whistle. As I stated before, there are some rough edges, but worth the purchase price, I think (and it shows some promise).
Oh, and does anyone know the name of the first tune? Thanks.
Unusual artifact in the sound produced by
that whistle. Seemed to have an undertone
resonance of some sort - or maybe it was
a resonance from the room or recording.
I just got one of the polycarbonate whistles yesterday. At that price it was totally a matter of curiosity. Interesting material, but way too much ‘hiss’ in the whistle for my taste. If you blow hard enough some of the airishness leaves … but that’s too much like work!
But he does ship very fast & seems a nice enough person. If someone likes a whistle that can take being played hard … try it – it fits the bill.
Thanks very much for the kind words (and you too peeplj). The resonance was mostly from the whistle, though the room added to it a bit. I think if Rick cuts through that in future models, the tone will be excellent.
I do like that characteristic in my whistles (having to blow hard to get it to work), so I guess this one was right up my alley.
