Dionna, played by John McSherry on Youtube video

Would anyone have notation for the beautiful tune, Dionna, played by John McSherry on this Youtube video?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=k0KQTv8qvkE

I would love to have a copy to learn it from. It would save me time from having to play the video over and over to learn it by ear.

Many thanks!

Cheers! Richard

Hey Richard,

Have you picked up the album “At First Light” John did a few years back? Doinna is track three.

Who made the Pipes??

but wait!
Surely that’s not keys i hear..
and good heavens..delay…it can’t be
It’s too bad too, cause it’d be good otherwise..

frikin awesome

Boring new agey rubbish I think. I don’t like this kind of stuff. Sounds like a synthesizer being played, very Spillaneish. Still, each to her/his own :sunglasses:

Rubbish? You say John’s piping is rubbish?
What a complement…

“Rubbish? You say John’s piping is rubbish?
What a complement…” Tony

Thank you Tony.

I wrote that the tune was rubbish, and sounds very new agey and Davey Spillanish in my opinion. I didn’t say John’s piping was rubbish, mind you I’m not a fan of John’s style of piping either - different strokes for different pipers. I prefer the piping of Pat Mitchell, Mick Coyne, Johnny Doran, Mickey Dunne, Peter Laban, Mick O’Brien, Leo Rickard, Seamus Ennis, Jim Dowling to name a few.

Perhaps it’s a traditional tune from another country?

Maybe someone with close links to John might be able to help. It would be interesting to know.

I always presumed it was a ‘Doina’ type of tune. But maybe, just maybe…

I’m ‘sort of’ sorry for having stirred up the hornets nest by poking the bear a little..
But it just kills me that many folks here consider anything with a synth/pad &
any effect on a pipe to be “new agey” or whatever..

I like to think that the pipes shine through clearly in this style, and that people seem to actually enoy it immensely, and actually even pay to listen to it.

I don’t get it
I mean, I do not like the ukulele much at all, but wouldn’t consider calling it rubbish if someone combined it with Uilleann pipes…it’s music for heavens sake?
I dunno, I spose the simple ‘to each his own’ appplies.

sheesh
I need some coffee..

Mr. Steampacket did state it was not to his tastes and offered the disclaimer " each to her/his own" in his very first (and second i.e. “different strokes” etc… etc.) response to this topic.

I think the real issue was somebody not taking the time to read said post close enough or grok its meaning.

In any case, let the record show that Mr. Packet (among others) doesn’t like it, but that other folk do. Nothing to get one’s knickers in a twist, over.

yeah Joe I hear ya.
In all honesty, I don;t know why I get myself in these discussions.
what is the bleepin point…

R

Honestly? I don’t believe there is any point. I mean, one man’s gold is another’s poop… we have our opinions and tastes. Why some feel the need to get hot over another’s tastes (or lack therein) boggles the feck out of me.

… such is life.

There’s gotta be some fancy term for the felt need to argue this kinda stuff via online forums.
maybe something like:
“KnickerTwistItis”
or “DebateStupidStuffItis”
or “MyOpinionReallyCountsItis”

ok, I’m done.

Thanks.

According to Alan Ng’s Irish tune site Doinna is a tune from the Breton tradition Doinna - irishtune.info

I just don’t like the tune, I find it repetitive, and melodically uninteresting. I don’t like the sound of the pipes here. It’s not a matter of life or death thought, is it? I’m sure there are tunes I like that others can’t stand. It would be boring if we all liked the exact same tunes, and had same sounding pipes

Like in Scotland?!

The tune is a prelude to a bigger tune called “The Old Man Rocking the Cradle” as recorded by Leo Rowsome on the King of The Pipers or “Ri na Piobairi”

its also on an early Finbar Furey recording and he called it Roys Hands.

If it’s the same tune I asked about a while ago, this is the answer I received from another piper. My PMs are not explicit enough to glean, but I think it might be…??

“Doïna” is a tune composed by Jacky Molard and played by the breton band “Gwerz” on their first album in 1986.

I like this tune a lot. But I can’t find the dots (Yes I need to read…)
Can anybody please help
Thanks
Ged

Sorry to “reel” you in Lads but I think the request that Richard had was if anyone has or knew how to obtain the notation to this song, not where the pipes were made or how bad or good the song was. Opinions are great but state them as your assisting fellow pipers in this forum. I don’t mean to “Police” this topic but I would also like to get the notation to this song and any HELP would be grateful. Thats my two cents..anyone have change for a hundred?..LOL!!
