Did anyone catch Dr Who Friday night, Sci Fi channel(US)?

I didn’t even pay attention to the fact that they had brought the show back, anyway, it’s being shown on the Sci Fi channel on Friday nights at 9pm. Lots of odd british fun. Actually, it’s easier to follow than the original, doesn’t drag on for an hour and a half, and doesn’t have that that cheap look the orginal suffered from. I haven’t seen the original series in such a long time, they used to play it religiously on the New Jersey Network but stopped in the early 90’s. I got to see the Colin Baker and Sylvester Mccoy years, as well the the first doctor. None of Tom Baker’s episodes :frowning: . Anyway, I’m looking forward to taping the show each week.

Hmm, I actually thought it was pretty lame, no depth at all. Rose is cute (Billie Piper), but that’s about all it had going for it, I thought. Better that someone should re-run (the british version) of Touching Evil, now there was a good show. Of course the U.S. remake totally sucked. :swear:

Sci-Fi Channel should re-run The Prisoner, now there’s entertainment!

Friends who have seen the whole series says it gets better as it goes. I liked it, not quite as much fun as Tom Baker but it was great to see it again after all these years.

Used to it came on OETA, but this new one you have to have cable or satellite or something.

Well that’s good to hear, I’ll give it a few more episodes before I bail.

We saw it and enjoyed it. I thought the new doctor was excellent. It brought back some good memories…we used to watch Dr. Who when we were dating back in the early '80s!

Redwolf

I saw an article in the paper about it and meant to watch, but forgot.

I understand this Doctor is only in for one season, and that the second season episodes currently showing in England have some other actor. I think the business about Time Lords being able to regenerate and look completely different is one of the neatest ways to let a different actor play the same character - much better than just replacing someone (like Darren on the old Bewitched) and not saying anything.

Will try to remember to watch next week.

I liked the old Daleks. Major cheese factor; they made me think of Brutalist coffe pots with voices like withered, ineffectual, crabby old farts.

 Only you, Nano, could have come up with that one. What would we do without you?

You’d be freed of the oppression of my pedantry.

“Oppression can only survive through silence.”

Just so, just so.

we be safe here then!

I’ve seen the whole series. About all I can say is that the episodes written by Russel T Davies tend to annoy me greatly for a variety of reasons, but the other writers’ episodes I thought were all fairly decent. Keep an eye out for “The Unquiet Dead” and “Dalek” later on.

I will go ahead and warn that the series finale will be highly disappointing to anybody with an appreciation for well-written plots. Another RTD one…

I’ve seen one episode, “The Christmas Invasion” with the next doctor, played by David Tennant, and I think he’ll be very good, even better than Eccleston. He actually feels like the Doctor of the old series instead of some emo-boyish knockoff.

I’m surprised that the turnover of the one actor would be so quick . . .a bit like Colin Baker, hmmm? I liked Colin’s doctor but supposedly he was as diffucult tempered as his character, thus the replacement. His run was short and didn’t last long enough for me. Too bad they just didn’t take the characters in a different direction.

I have no fear of being a geeky nerd and getting a virtual wedgie . . . but I have to point out that they only have thirteen doctors/actors they can cast and then a Timelord’s life runs out. Unless they do what the Master did. Didn’t he gain more regenerations than the basic thirteen?

Colin Baker being sacked had nothing to do with the actor’s temperament and everything to do with the BBC execs’ opinion of the show in general taking a down-turn. Sylvester McCoy, his replacement, only got three seasons before the whole show was cancelled (he’d planned on sticking around for a while, hoping to eventually outlive Tom Baker). It was just the climate at the BBC that was bad. And some rather badly-written scripts doing bad things to the ratings. Colin Baker had a few good ones, like his Dalek episode, but a lot of it was shoddy - The Twin Delimma is just about my least favorite Who episode in existence. I really can’t watch it, and I like just about all of the Who episodes I’ve seen, even the rather silly ones.

That and the clown coat makes me want to claw my eyes out. But yea…

As for Christopher Eccleston, it was planned that he’d only be there for one season from the start. The BBC knew it from day one when they cast him, but the media of course made a big deal about it when they found out and started a bunch of funny rumors over it. David Tennant ought to be around for a bit longer than one season.

I could probably find the answer on some other site - but how many Doctors have there been?

David Tennant is the TENTH doctor

1 William Hartnell
2 Patrick Troughton
3 John Pertwee
4 Tom Baker
5 Peter Davison
6 Colin Baker
7 Sylvester McCoy
8 Paul McGann
9 Christopher Ecceleston
10 David Tennant

And I didn’t even have to look them up. :stuck_out_tongue:

is geek

Great show. It’s on DVD.
