My Sweetheart D whistle’s tenon needs rethreading. Its slipping a bit and not staying in tune. I had this idea of rethreading with DENTAL FLOSS.
I have tried it as a temporary thing and it works well enough and the contrast against the maple looks beautiful. But what about the long run?
If you think this is stupid please give me some reasons.
Any good advice on restringing the tenon would be appreciated. I promise to TRY and not tease anyone in this topic.
This idea comes up (and is controversial [like every other idea]) in scottish bagpipe circles. The argument against it is that dental floss is (supposedly) abrasive and may wear the wood away.
Thanks, Denny! Tal, we would be happy to rewind your joint for you!
Sure you could use whatever you’d like…but yarn has the loft you need to do a decent seal, and then we slather on cork grease…Ralph said, after I learned how to do it, that I was now qualified to learn how to tie flies.
Thank you so much for your kind offer Tygress. It makes me very happy.
Unfortunately I am in Australia and mailing to and fro may take a while. I would miss the Sweet D because I play it daily as breaks from my flute. Also, all ITM pieces that I am learning are first learntt on this whistle before I move onto the flute. My flute ITM is pretty clutzy. I seem to grasp the feel of the music better and more spontaneously on the whistle.
Is it alright to seek your advice here? And anyone else?
Thanks.
I recently visted Mark Hoza of Kything flutes to discuss a B flute I am having made.
He generously rethreaded my whistle tenon for me. I even got to choose the colour of the thread - a deep cherry red. Mark was delighted with the appearance and play of my Sweetheart Whistle.
I, myself, was amazed by the honkability of an E flute he had lying on his piano. I have never heard a flute play so strong and before this I had not played any E flute with such richness in timbre.
