I just received a Dave Copley 6 keyed blackwood flute.
I’m a bit bowled over. It’s a magnificent instrument,
simple, functional, elegant, with a powerful lovely
sound. The keys are comfortably placed
and easy to use. I’ve never played the competing flutes,
so I can’t make comparisons,
but if this is foreplay, I’m a dead man. Best, Jim
Tom
Fellas and gals, Am I right in supposing that one’s right
pinky on a keyed flute is balanced on the low key?
Where do you’all put it? Thanks, Jim
Wow, GREAT NEWS!!! I would be ecstatic over such a lovely flute!
So, how is the sound??? I’m sure you’ll really be a-honkin’ and a-barkin’ !!!
Just like Tom on his new LeHart!
This is a great week for y’all!!!
Enjoy!

Pictures!!
I’ve seen people keep their pinky on the lowest key (Eb, right?). I’ve also seen people rotate the whole last joint so that the key is out of the way (I assume they don’t use that key much, and find it a hindrance); sometimes they’ll rotate the foot back again when a set’s coming up that calls for that key. It’s all the fiddlers’ fault. . .
Copley’s isn’t one of those flutes that requires venting that key for certain notes, is it?
And you’ve seen Terry McGee’s fingering charts for keyed flutes, yes? If not, skip over to his webpage and browsse around. Much good info.
Have fun with the new lady,
Aaron
Yes, Dave Copley makes a heck of a flute. I have a keyless from him, and if I ever decide I need a modern keyed flute (ie, one other than my antique German 6-key), I’ll be giving him some serious consideration.
Congratulations on receiving a flute that will give you many years of happiness and beautiful music!
Steven
I don’t have a camera! One of these refugees from the
19th century, you know. Thanks to all for the
tips. Yes, this flute makes me sound like
somebody on a CD. Best
I’m trying to be patient…mine is next, due about the 27th. Here I am, trying to put it out of my mind… “Let’s see, what could I do to stop thinking about my flute? I know! I’ll read what’s going on at Chiff and Fipple!” It didn’t help. Congratulations, though!
Griff
well, you will be very happy,
and meanwhile you get to
look forward to it.
I know, I know…
It came today, Jim. What a beautiful instrument.
Griff
Yes, it’s still amazing. Congrats.
Dave is an excellent craftsman, he puts a lot detail in his work.
I visited his shop a few weeks ago (only 15 minutes from here) and he has been investing in some new tools. (That new gun drill was nice).
I would say the his work is great and he is continuously improving things.
Yes, DC’s flutes are improving. I bought one from him
three years ago, when they were first reviewed postively
here, and the new ones are much better still.
