Danu Concert

Danu will be performing in Winnipeg, Canada on Wednesday March 19th 8pm at the West End Cultural Centre. Check their website for more info. http://www.wecc.ca

Well Danu played here last night to a packed and enthusiastic audience and they were great! They have so much personality and fun in their playing. A bit of a disapointment was that Tom, their flute player was absent. They said he was in Cape Breton awaiting the imminent arrival of his firstborn…a reasonable excuse for missing the concert I suppose!
Best wishes to the new young family.

Ugh. Going to see Danu, only to find that Tom Doorley wasn’t there would be a major disappointment to me… Still, I don’t doubt for a second that the rest of the lads are more than capable of making nice music on their own.

Tom Doorley, a dad…

Jens

I hear Peter Molloy, whose father you may have heard of, is filling in for Tom Doorley on this tour. Surely that’s not so disappointing.

Surely that’s not so disappointing.

Certainly not. My understanding was that there was no flute player present at the concert, none being mentioned.

Indeed he was, when Danu played here in Washington DC last Friday night. The flute shoes were quite well filled, I’d say. My only disappointment at the show was that Ciaran O Gealbhain, their singer, was suffering from what seemed to be a major head cold and thus he was not in very good voice. And I hear that he is leaving the band at the end of this tour, to be replaced by a female singer whose name escapes me now…

Peter Molloy is my buddy and I know he was psyched and a bit nervous to be filling in for Tom, who is a good friend of his.
I’d love to hear a more detailed report about how Peter did. He’s one heck of a player, he is, with a style very different than Tom’s.
The singer is leaving? That’s sad… I love his style. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s going solo though, he’s definately got what it takes. A woman in Danu?? That’ll be a change of pace. I wonder how she’ll put up with the lads?!
Best,
Chris

So Chris, when is the younger Molloy going to get his own band? Anyone who has filled in for John Wynne and Tom Doorley is surely good enough to be a full fledged band member with somebody. Or is he just going to keep on being substitute-flautist-in-residence for every band that is having trouble getting it’s flautist across the atlantic?

Peter did a great job filling in for Tom, and melded very well into the overall Danu sound - which I guess would be the main goal for a replacement, rather than exerting his own style no matter how good that style might be. He did such a good job of it that if you closed your eyes you probably wouldn’t have realized that Tom wasn’t there. (With eyes open, of course, you would have. Not just because they look a lot different, but also because Peter did not bounce around on stage nearly as much as Tom does. Which is probably a good thing. Tom can pull off the Energizer Bunny act, but I’m not sure I’d want to see any imitations of it…) Perhaps the acid test of how well he did was the Are You Ready Yet? set, which of course is a Tom Doorley trademark. Peter pulled it off flawlessy.

Now for a real test, he should sub for Harry Bradley sometime!

I saw Danu two weeks ago in Lowell, MA. It was an outstanding show. It wasn’t until the band introduced themselves that I realized that Peter Molloy, not Tom Doorley, was playing flute. Peter played with confidence and full command of the music–you wouldn’t have guessed that he was “just filling in”. I look forward to hearing them again next time they’re in the Boston area.

Also, the Lowell Sun ran a preview article, which you can find at the Sun’s web site (www.lowellsun.com). Just type “Danu” in the search engine to pull up the article. It’s full of interesting information concerning the upcoming changes in the band.

The woman joining Danu is Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh I believe. I think she should fit very well with the lads as she is a fantastic singer, and a devil of a flute player as well. I hope she plays flute quite a bit with Danu along with her singing, because she has a vibrant energy in her playing that is quite a joy to listen to.

edited for corrected spelling of Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh for which I should be given a gold star for getting close to right.

There was no flute player with them in Winnipeg. I’m sure that the new singer will be great, but one of the main attractions for me is the singing - it is refreshing to hear a male soloist in a young band - I do hope he continues to record as he has a lovely way with a song.
