Cure for musty flute smell?

Anybody got one?

Doc

hi doc, would be helpful if we knew what kind of flute you have…polymer or wood so the right advice can be given.
if polymer, take the stop out and just give it a good wash with some dishwashing liquid.
have a look at the cork it self…is it still sound or has it mould.
it is best to mop out any flute after playing, EVEN the polymer flutes can go musty I have noticed (dixon polymer 3 piece) when left assembled to dry.
for the wooden flutes the others will be able to help you out.

It’s a wooden flute.

After-shave.

Oh, you mean the flute smells funny? Leave it out of the case (disassembled) to air. Then oil it with something that doesn’t smell bad. Maybe olive oil infused with oregano… hmmmm pizza!

As Glauber said, air it out… then oil it with tea tree oil, works like a charm - Tod

I’ll bet your case is the culprit. Give it a good airing out as well. Maybe an afternoon in the hot sun (without the flute in it, of course).

The guy i buy oil from also has a “case odor eliminator”:

(scroll down to the bottom of the page).

If this is an old / antique flute you just bought, it may be a good idea to swab it inside with a little rubbing alcohol to remove any “crud” left there 200 years ago by previous owner. If you do that, be sure to oil immediately afterwards, because the alcohol or other solvent will dry out the bore.

The alcohol seems to have done the trick. I felt kind of bad swabbing all that 200 year old historic slobber out of the thing. :stuck_out_tongue:

It was amazing how much garp came out that has never come out with my regular oiling.

Thanks all,

Doc
