A grenadilla clarinet of mine was misplaced in a moldy case for a week and now smells very bad. I don’t care about the case. I just want that mildew smell out of my horn. I don’t want to use acetone or anything else that toxic and have so far gotten suggestions of rubbing alcohol, murphy’s oil soap, something they use to fumigate morgues, dish soap(which along with bleach I tried to no avail), tea tree oil(I like that one but that stuff is strong so wondering if it should be diluted), lysol and febreeze. Before this happened I bought it last summer in a sadly neglected state(it was used as a mantlepiece decoration for years) and cleaned and oiled it(almond oil), had it recorked and padded and it plays very well but smells very bad. It’s a 1987 Buffet E-11 in case you’re interested.
Thanks
Tee tree oil is supposed to kill every known bacterium at a concentration of over one half a percent. It makes them all leak.
Pity hospital managers are too stupid to use it on MRSA !
Good for gargling, too.
Powerful stuff. The smell of pure tea tree oil all but suffocates me - can’t breathe. My wife doesn’t mind it much, though.
What would you dilute it with?
Water. What else ?
Of course the only thing one could consider diluting water with is malt whisky.
I believe that tea tree oil has traditionally been used for sterilising Aborigines.
Please don’t tell us how! ![]()

Thanks. Was wanting that.
Not that you wont get help here, but have you checked out the Clarinet BB (clarinet Bulliten board)? It’s excellent, they may poo-poo your E11 in a heart beat because they are still cheap & plentiful, but will applaud the fact that at least you have wood body clarinet.
I would recommend wrapping the flute in newspaper, shoving some inside too. Should pull the odor in a week. I use this on old books that are too valuble to be cleaned any other way. ![]()
Thanks for that newspaper idea. I will try that. Yes I’ve posted on the Clarinet board.
