This thread is a real eye-opener for me. Prior to reading these posts, I’d only heard of attempts to cryogenically preserve near dead humans in the hope that their terminal conditions could be cured, and some benign person in the future would defrost them, and …so on. Well now I’m certain of one thing. If they cryogenically preserved some good whistles along with Walt Disney, then there’d be something in that package worth defrosting.
Isn’t the reasoning behind humans having themselves cryogenically preserved seriously wierd? Let’s assume that the procedure works for humans—unlikely I think. Why would people in the remote future bother defrosting Disney anyway? What does he think—they’ll carry him in triumph back to his old office that’s been waiting for him for 2,000 years? Even if they were to defrost and operate, the possibile upshots are endless. They might experiment on him. They might put him in a zoo. They might just defrost him and use him for fertiliser.

I agree.C&F,ers will no doubt rule the world by then and Walt would most likely be zipped up with a new batch.Imagine the price a genuine Disney whistle would fetch on E-bay in 2000 years!;)Mike

You misunderstood me, I’m talking about in the instrument cord on an electric guitar.
Having done quite a bit of research in this area, the benefits for brass (or other metal instruments) centers around altering (opinions vary as to better or worse) the resonating harmonics of the metal itself. A trumpet, or trombone, bell section (the length of tubing after the valves or slide/trigger section) resonates quite a bit more than the body of a whistle will in your hands. The idea seems to be to put the metal in such a state that it resonates more uniformly across the scale of the instrument, i.e. no dead or harsh notes that the performer must deal with. Still, the skill and experience of the player would likely far outweigh the results of treament to the ear of the audience.

With all due respect I have to make a slight correction, absolute 0 = -273 degrees Celsius. It is fresh in my mind from a certain evil Chem test I took last week.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to preserve the whistle makers. Remember, we have no idea who will defrost them. Imagine coming back to life only to discover that you were about to be eaten. I wouldn’t wish that fate on even the worst whistle maker.
Now freezing the waiting list of great living makers and having the right to defrost it just when you feel like ordering. That sounds like a great idea, so long as you order before they starve.

I was tempted to say that John. There are also a few whistle makers who think that is exactly what some of us would wish for them. But we’re not really like that, are we? Well …ARE WE?
Remember, the defrosters have got to know that what they have is a great whistle maker and not just a great meal.
Realistically—as though we haven’t been all along—I don’t think whistle makers earn enough to afford cryogenic preservation. Now I wonder how many would take the risk? Anyone for a quick freeze out there?
One would guess the best meal would be the best whistle maker. After all, one eats someone else by pure sympathy, just to get a share of his qualities–what do you think we are, cannibals ?

One would think anyone offering themselves up for deep freezing would not be in the best physical (or mental) shape, and even more worse for wear after defrosting.Healthy cryo volunteers would have mulch more to worry about(as far as going in the cooking pot go,s) then fellow disease ridden cryoites Mike

I was worried about the Hannibal Lectors of the future. I’m sure they’d have the right experimental approach to things. Well, come to think of it, if you’ve just been defrosted, operated on to cure your terminal condition, just regained consciousness and suddenly you discover that you’re headed for the cooking pot, what then? Frankly, I wouldn’t be much consoled by the thought that they wanted my qualities.

See, if you freeze-dry the poor lad (or lass), then grind him into fertilizer, how the heck will your average archeologist of year 3002 guess he hasn’t unearthed just another yet box of Nescafe, can you tell me ? See, a good bone from a good smith can improve a good whistle, without grinding it to powder foyst. I saw how they were supposed to smith axes in the good old time, live report on TV Arte channel so it’s gotta be true. Said they used plain soft iron, hammered it into shape, and then at the last stage just before tempering, would rub the hot metal with a cow’s horn : presto carbon around for a hard steel cutting edge, with low-carb iron in the middle for diet, and maybe for flexibility. Pity I didn’t have a Odorama TV to get a whif of this BBQ.
Anyway–here’s Whistle High Teak Shop Talk #1-- this maybe the recipe for that real mediaeval iron age low D session equalizer I dream of. Anyone with sources for a real horny cryogenic low-whistle-top-smith ?
