I though Matt Molloy was the only one who danced a melody over a drone. Check it out at 3:01

Can we say flexible embouchure?!

What, when you pay $11,000.00 for a flute it doesn’t just do that by itself?
Seriously though, that’s amazing.
Kickin’ it like it’s “reel”.

I miss that piece. Couldn’t even get thru the third set of variations now. ![]()
As I play through the valley of old Strathmore
I take a look at my life and think I want nothing more
‘Cause I’ve been whistlin’ and flutin’ so long,
Even Joanie Madden thinks that my tone is strong!
But I ain’t never played a tune if nobody heard it.
Hide away my room? You know that’s unheard of!
I been spendin’ most my life
Living in a fluter’s paradise.

Crans are only a compromise,
They’ve no place in a fluter’s paradise.
My embouchure is really nice
I’m living in a fluter’s paradise.
I might have to get medieval on your hiney!

I’ve got to put in a plug for one of my old teachers. Keep in mind he’s doing this on a five-key instrument that’s German to boot. ![]()
OMG I remember that piece. I learned it on silver flute when I was very young. That part @ 3.01 was my favorite. I sucked at it fierce, though. She’s quite good at it.
I stumbled across that KL clip from searching for “wooden flute” on YouTube in my first few forays there-on a few years back… Very impressive, but it puzzled me because I know James Galway’s recording of a set of variations on Carnival of Venice which are much better (the variations, that is) and there are rather more of them… I think JG’s set was by C19th Italian virtuoso Briccialdi (the guy apparently responsible for the non Bohm B/Bb thumb-keys on the modern standard Bohm flute) and I’d never heard either recording or mention of this Genin set before.
This thread has made me dig out an ancient cassette tape of off-air recordings of Galway from the late 1970s (my early days as a fluter!) to refresh my recollection of the Briccialdi - I was right… as in the Genin setting is both shorter and much less exciting - if you like virtuoso showpieces (I confess I have a grudging soft-spot/can’t help being stunned by the sheer technical brilliance…) - I don’t really see why anyone at top pro level like KL would play the Genin when they could play the Briccialdi!
So now I’ve gone to find a less mussed up recording of wee Jimmy’s performance. It is on i-tunes for 79p and Amazon MP3 downloads for 69p. It is evidently the same recording from 1975-ish when JG was in his real prime, but reissued umpteen times.
To the Off-Topic Posters:
Could we PLEASE stick to talking about Gangsta Rap? Check the thread title if you feel otherwise.

My sister had me saying coolio and I had no idea where it came from until now (I had thought it had something to do with Julio).
So in keeping with posting etiquette, does anyone know any sick gangsta’ hornpipes?

Two of the three linked YouTube thingies had me nearly throwing up and I had to turn them off after less than a minute 'cos I just couldn’t stand listening to any more … and the other one had me absoutely enthralled - totally brilliant - not only technically gifted but musically wonderful as well.
There, now I have avoided insulting any of them.

Yep, that’s it - just found it myself, came back to the thread and you’d beaten me to it ![]()
I have also been writing about this on Facebook and Marin Alunic reminded me that Conal O’Grada did a setting (folkier/less “virtuosic”) on his The Top of Coom album.
I suppose it is about public mas********n either way! I suspect the fluters are more impressively equipped. ![]()
Except the tuba wins…
Goodness have you tried Gravol or seasick bands?
That’s good.
