Concert Report: Gaelic Storm

In a word: GO. If you can.

Much fun. I just got back from the opening show of the new tour. I had never heard these guys before so I didn;t really have any expectations. They are vaguely Pogues-ish with maybe more of an Oyster band feel + Latin rhythm section. Plenty of energy and drive. They were obviously having fun, and the mostly middle-aged crowd eventually got into it.

ANyways, the lineup consists of a

  1. guitarist,
  2. box-player/harmonicist/
  3. bodhran/didgeridoodooer
  4. Bongo/Percussion guy
  5. Fiddler
  6. UP/GHB/whistler/synth piper

They were all good at their respective instruments. The piper was doing his first gig with the band. He looked like he was going to die of nerves the entire night, but played very well. MOreover, he was a lefty! (Lefty pipers are just cool  )

The fiddler was awesome, both as a musician and as a stage presence. It didn;t hurt that she’s drop-dead gorgeous.

DOwnsides:

  • THe UP’s weren’t audible in the mix at all:(
-A few of the slower songs were kinda indistinguishable from radio pop, kinda bland.
  • The fiddler doesn’t live nearby.

All in all, a great show.

I’ve seen them–they played at Mt. Pleasant, Texas, a couple of years back.

They do a good show; I enjoyed it.
