Comments on SF Low Whistle Fest 1/10

Well, the SF Low Whistle Fest and session is over. Please read below for comments on the event.

If you are interested in attending what is turning out to be a well attended Low Whistle and Music Fest in San Francisco ( > http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=16405 > )and you do not have directions please get in contact with Stephen ( stiofan ) as soon as possible.

Low whistles from across the globe will be in attendance for your viewing and testing. There may even be a couple one-of-a-kind attendees. There will even be one given away courtesy of one of our own C&F whistle makers.

Personally I am hoping some of the more experienced players will take time to do a little instruction as well.

Bring a snack to share and let’s have fun!

From the responses so far, the session/soiree on Saturday promises to be quite the divers gathering of lowhistlers (and other guest players) from the surrounding territories of the bay area, and sure to be a memorable day full of trad musique and rousing craic, northern california style. Looking forward to seeing you all.

Howdy,

I couldn’t make this event as something came up last minute. Someone give us a report, please!

best,

Dave

Report is forthcoming. Need to go through all the eval sheets that were filled out. Tony will be posting music recorded soon as well.

We had a fine time at the session/soiree on Saturday - played lots and lots of tunes, compared all kinds of different whistles and had an unequivocally good time together. Thanks to all who came out - Aldon (and his friend Joseph), Tony, Kar, Charlotte and especially to Steven (Norcalmusican) & Renee for your help and enthusiasm in getting this gathering underway. Stay tuned for more reviews and perhaps a few soundclips in the near future…

Here is a link to a song that we all played and posted by Tony:

That’s it, no talk about the whistles?!? C’mon now, that’s not right

Of course we talked about whistles. If I ever say another word about whistles, I"ll gag myself with a low d (on purpose). I even went so far as to fill out survey forms reviewing whistles Norcal brought (he also brought the survey forms). I felt like I was at a staff training at work, for pete’s sake. Got to try whistles I’d never seen before and one I’d never heard of (and can’t remember the name of now).

Got lost on way to Steven’s house in SF. Cussed while staring at map, swore (as I always swear every time I drive in SF) that I’ll never come back again. I don’t think I’ve ever driven in without getting lost. I write down directions before hand and then I can’t find the street I’m supposed to turn onto. So I circle around figuring I’ll cross it, but end up driving up windy (rhymes with blind) narrow, hilly streets that take you nowhere. Arrrgggh.

Cool! That’s the very song I’ve been working on for several days now. Even though I ended up not being able to go (due to computer and other emergencies), I might have been playing along with y’all without even knowing it–though I think it was Sunday or Monday before I could get all the way through the blag-staggin’ thing.

Gosh Tony, it sounds like a lost weekend in the wilds of Kerry or Donegal or something… Now, I could be mistaken (I was once before, or was I?), but I’m fairly certain that most of the street signs generally face the right direction, and the roads actually match the little squiggly lines on the city map, but one never knows…maybe the Golden Gate Park fairies took you for a ride…all joking aside, I suppose it’s somewhat comparable to sitting in the endless bumper to bumper traffic for over an hour (though psychologically it seemed like days) waiting to get TO the Bay Bridge from your place in San Pablo in November. Maybe someday we’ll all retire to some little cottage town on the west coast of Eire where we can walk to one another’s houses and pubs to play together…

It’s an East Bay thing. Had I not attended SF State, I would probably still feel the way Tony does about driving in the City. It’s just different than here. I always GRR at least once in that town. Getting in and out of parking lots to the various stores gets to me as well as the maze of one-way streets, muni lanes, no left turns etc etc.

I would never live in SF. Never. yet my flute partner (who grew up in Seattle) would never live anywhere but SF. Different strokes. Other Weekender grew up on Potrero Hill and I can now almost handle that, though the streets get a bit steep.

I feel his pain.

I’m more concerned about his whistle comments! Granted, playing them should be the emphasis, but talking about them is part of the fun too!!! :stuck_out_tongue:
