Cnat on a Hoover???

Hey folks

I’ve been browsing the boards for around three years now (mainly for some whistle reviews) and I finally decided to post!

Here’s the desl. I have a brass Hoover in D in the making as we speak (oh boy, oh boy, oh boy), my first high end whistle. I’ve noticed that there seems to be some difference of opinion on the fingering of C natural on a Hoover whistle. Does it require a different fingering than the normal OXXOOO pattern? Or is it just the narrow bore that needs this?

Thanks.

Micah

I am fortunate to own quite a few Hoovers. My experience is that the Whitecap and narrow bore are the only two that necessitate half-holing the C natural - and the Whitecap can be made to behave using cross fingering, if one decreases the air flow, slightly…
With Mack, you have made a good choice.
Best.

On the Whitecap you can also crossfinger it something like this: oxxxxo

I crossfinger both the regular and narrow bore.

Cool. Thanks for such speedy replies. I guess I’ll just have to wait and try it out when it gets here (can… hardly… wait…/passes out/)

Narrow bore brass: 0xx xx0 or half hole

After I got my regular bore brass, I played with it and found that the four finger cross fingering was the best. I emilaed Mack with some other questions and I also asked him if I had specified it, could he have made mine to be in tune with the two finger cross fingering? His reply was that with Cnat it was a matter of fate and he couldn’t really control it. Sometimes they were good with two fingers, sometimes with four. I think hs said that usually his were better with four.

I have had to get used to it, since that is the first whistle that I owned that required that fingering. But I LOVE that whistle. LOVE it. It’s sweet and quiet and wonderful.

One note, Mack will give you hints on windway clogging, as his whistles are prone to it. I use the dish soap solution and it works pretty well but needs to be redone a couple times a week.
