CD Recommendation

I picked up FourMileHouse by Alan & John Kelly and It’s awesome. It’s one of my favorite albums now. If your a fan of John Wynn’s or Colm O’Donnell’s playing style you’ll really like this. A matter o’ fact John Wynne and John Kelly both were taught from the same teacher Paddy Ryan.

The flute playing on this album comes in very clearly. I really like the combination of flute and Piano Accordion. I don’t know if it’s the combination of instruments or the production but you can hear John’s flute much better on this album than Crawford’s in “In Good Company”. John also plays a Grinter which made me happy because I’m on the waiting list for one.

I found I really like the Piano Accordian..Alan plays the ‘Parting Glass’ and it sends chills up my spine.

Anyway if you don’t have it, I would recommend getting this one. Has anyone gotten a hold of the new PAUL McGRATTAN album?

Dude, you’re showing your age - they don’t even MAKE albums any more. I sure do miss that good ole full sized artwork and lyrics though… damn mini-sized CD’s ruined that for us, not to mention you can’t spin a CD on your fingertip like you could with those albums.

Someone (forget the company) just started making CD’s that look like 45’s. I thought it was funny. They’re black with little grooves.

LOL!..

I’ll change it so those young ones on this board arn’t forced into a history lesson.

Yeah, it’s easy to tell who the quasi-geezers are around here, ain’t it? LOL!

Hmmm, that’s weird. I don’t have any problem hearing the flute on In Good Company.

He’s got a new album? Do you know what it’s called?

Well-known Irish flute player Paul McGrattan has released a new solo CD
called “Keelwest,” and featuring Paddy Glackin (fiddle), Arty McGlynn
(guitar), Colm Murphy (bodhran), as well as fellow Beginish members Noel
O’Grady (bouzouki) and Gavin Ralston (keyboards). I haven’t heard it yet,
but I can’t imagine it being bad… in fact it’s most likely to be
brilliant. And I will have a whole box of it directly from Paul sometime
next week. So let me know if you want one.

I can hear the flute ok on “In Good Company” but it’s either the fiddle or the production that at times I can’t clearly hear what Kevin is doing.

Either the Accordian is tone-wise more distant from the flute than fiddle or it’s maybe has a lower pitch that I can make out the flute easier.

I also listened to ‘P.J. CROTTY & JAMES CULLINAN: HAPPY TO MEET’ (flute & fiddle)which I think is a great album with wonderful tunes. It’s produced by Kevin Crawford…but again I couldn’t make out the flute as well as on FourMileHouse.

I almost got Barry Kerr’s album because he has such a wonderful unique style but It just had too much variety and not enough flute for my taste.I get albums mainly to learn tunes from them. I put allot of value in how much flute they play, the style they play, and how clearly or distinctly I can make out the flute part. I have mellowed a bit on this because I think it’s a great exercise and see value in taking and learning tunes from the fiddle, whistle, and pipes. Not Bodhran however…

His new album is so hard to get hold of!!! AND! it’s been out for a month!
I’ll give that site a go, thanks.

David

The Paul McGrattan CD is available for mail order on the Claddagh website.

Ken

Yeah..planxty If your in Ireland I woulnd’t order that from the U.S…dosn’t make much sense for it to go half way around the world just to end up where it started out. I’d try Claddagh website as suggested by Ken.

 yep, just noticed that was a US site.

“And now for something completely different…”

Is there any word on the “flute thing” in Seattle which was cancelled? I may be over sometime, and it would make sense for me to be over when it is on.

David

I heard it was cancelled but I don’t know why Casey hasn’t adjusted his website.

Here it is http://kendaco.telebyte.com/cburns/tfs.html

For those flute players in Seattle Chris Norman is putting on a workshop :

Traditional Flute, Chris Norman, Sun., Jan. 26, 2:00-4:00, $30. Open to all levels but geared for intermediate to advanced players. By identifying stylistic differences between Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, and French Canadian styles of musicÑwith special emphasis on ornamentation, articulation, phrasing, and using the breath to bring the music to lifeÑthis workshop will give participants a palette of ideas and techniques for creating their own individual styles. The instructor performs as a soloist and with The Chris Norman Ensemble, The Baltimore Consort, Skyedance, Helicon, Chatham Baroque, and Concerto Caledonia.
