Good news! Since I’ve just taken up the flute (about 2 months ago), I’m looking for all the instruction I can find. And although my teacher will be back from spending a month in Ireland in a couple of weeks, the workshop in February will be something to look forward to. Any word on who will be teaching?

Not yet… A couple of names have been tossed around, but I haven’t yet heard a final decision. I’ll post something here when it is decided.
The flute instructor for this workshop will be Kieran Marsden. Those of you from the Bay Area might know him as the regular flute player at the An Bodhran session in San Francisco. Well, at least that’s how I know him… Kieran is a great flute player and this workshop is your opportunity to learn from him. Register now!
John Gallagher will be comming to the SF Piper’s Club Tionol. He will have a couple of his flutes with him so they can be tried out. The club is holding the whistle and flute workshop fee at $30, rather than $40 after Feb. 1st. as shown presently on the website. The parties and sessions are GREAT. Well worth attending if you can.

Very tempting for me to go, especially for the flute class and an opportunity to try out flutes. Still, as a beginner, I don’t know how much one can really learn in a single class. Often, these classes are packed and the instructor is hard pressed to spend much time with any one student (or perhaps spends too much time with one student and little with the others 
).
I would say go if you can, every little bit you get out of the class will help, and you will get a surprising amount out of just meeting folks with the same interests and chatting.
As I said in another thread, John Gallagher will probably be droping my flute off to me on his way to San Francisco. If any of you folks on the west coast would want to take a try on a cocobolo a la Chris Norman, I’ll just have Johnny to keep it and bring me when he gets back. I hope I will be able to play like Chris Norman as soon as I get it, what say?

Flute class looks to be small, so no problem getting plenty of individualized attention. Another plus is that the sessions and parties are also great. Observing instruction of more advanced players will give you pointers you can apply as you advance. Bring a recorder (minidisc etc. not the wooden kind).

Nelson- thanks so much for your kind offer to delay flute gratification. i’d quite enjoy checking out your Gallagher, but are you sure you want the tender young thing exposed to the big wide world so… shall we say… suddenly?

Ok- Quite by accident, I will be in SF for a getaway that weekend but with the husband in tow so probably won’t be able to take any classes (unless he finds a fishing seminar) but would like to try other flutes besides mine (Sweetheart Rosewood). Can anyone tell me how this might be done?

Rats… If I’d known about this sooner, I’d have gone for the flute and whistle workshops and to buy a Burke in person rather than ordering online and waiting in limbo forever. Unfortunately, I have scheduling conflicts that will prevent me from going.
