Casey Burns Low A flute, anybody have experience with it?

I just ordered a Low A flute from Casey and had a great chat with him, but I am curious though, if anybody has experience playing any one of his low flutes.

I’ve played his Mopane D now for three years and absolutely love the flute!

Grey Larsen has one, which I saw when it
arrived. It looks great and sounds very good;
also it’s remarkably easy to finger, given
its size.

Not the A,but the Bb!Will that do? It has the most marvelous tone! Everyone I’ve played it for has said so,and they’re totally right. It speaks very easily up to the third octave note that on a D flute would be an A but is an F on this flute. It takes a little more breath than my D flute, but also kind of a light touch with the breath, because it speaks so easily. It’s a tad heavier than my D,but not too much.I love it sooooo much!

Yes, the A is no harder to finger than the Bb,
remarkably. As you all probably know,
the same head joint handles both bodies.

I would really like a low Pitched Flute but I dont’ even have a nice Wooden D Flute if I had a large amount of money…

Sorry that was kind of irrelevant.

Casey makes a lovely boxwood C flute.

I played one once a few years back at the Dusty Strings shop in Seattle. The holes were angled off to ease the stretch, but as I play left-handed, this turned out to be counter-productive. It was still quite a pleasant surprise to play. Really floor-shaking resonance and it didn’t take much air either.

Thanks all!

Casey said that if down the road I wanted the B flat body he would retro fit it for me. I have no doubt that I am getting a good flute from Casey, the man is passionate and caring about his work and that the best possible instrument to the customers satisfaction is in the player’s hand.

Looking forward to its arrival and so are the singers I will accompany on it.

Well I’ve had mine for a few months now and I must say I’m about to send it back for a tune-up…literally. I’ve been trying to work with it and lip the various notes that are off hoping that with some seasoning it would get settled down. Hasn’t happened so far. (Naming notes as though they were on a D flute)…the low “E” is quite sharp the “G” is flat and the “A” is all over the place. The second octave is fine.

As for tone? Sublime!

I have a C and a Bb CB flute, both
well in tune. I’ve seen a good number
of his D flutes too, in fact. On two occasions
they weren’t in tune, I suspect
the thread wrappings needed to
be redone in one of them. On both occasions the owner
sent them back and the result was
excellent. Casey really stands by
his work, and then some.

The flutes he makes that I know best
are all wood, and the feature that most
stands out for me is that they are
immensely likeable. Jessie K has described
aptly the ‘intimate’ quality of playing these,
one participates in the production of tone
in a very satisfying way. Also they handle
and finger very well.

It’s hard for me to fit Casey B flutes into the
pantheon, because he has a very individual
vision. He’s filling a niche nobody else quite
does, I think, both pricewise and designwise.
Very satisfying flutes to play. As I mentioned
earlier, he has some lovely boxwood.

You hit on the head for me Jim;

Some nights when playing Casey’s D flute in Mopane and nothing appears to going right in my playing, along comes a tune that everything is right and more, even to the point I almost stopped myself to listen to myself. The sound was just there and I wanted to hang on to every second of it.

This is the only flute I have ever played so I can’t speak for other flutes, but I have come to learn to love this flute for just those moments above when everything is right with the world and it is amazing!

Now more than a few days ago, I’m am looking forward to this new instrument that I have ordered.

I just wanted to let everybody know what a classy guy Casey is to work with. After posting last night about my tuning problems with my A flute I got an email this morning from Casey saying to send it in with a careful description of the problems and he will take care of it. Can’t ask for better responsiveness than that! I probably shouldn’t have said anything publicaly till I’d given Casey a chance to work with it.
