care of Casey Burns Folk Flute

Hi. For those of you that have a CB FF, did it come with instructions? Mine didn’t and I’m wondering if it needs a breaking in period (probably too late  ) and if and how soon I should oil it.

I have some food grade almond oil with vitamin E that I use for wooden whistles.

Thanks for any info, and yes I will email Casey if no one here is forthcoming with suggestions.

I believe you can find those instructions on Casey’s website, but here’s the jist. Don’t play more than 5 minutes at a time, up to one hour a day for the first month. After that you can play longer. Oil after every 5 to 10 hours of playing time.

That comes out to like 2-5 times a day! That’s a lot of oiling!

I think that’s excessive too. But if you’re using almond oil (or olive, peanut, etc) and this being a keyless flute, you won’t do any harm. You can take the approach of oiling after (or before) each playing if you want.

If you oil so often with a drying oil like linseed, you’ll probably create accumulation inside the bore. :astonished:

Only if you don’t thouroughly swab out the excess after you’ve let it soak in.

Actually, it says: “The flute should be oiled every 5 to 10 hours of playing time…”.

Thank God! I thought I was gonna die, getting up
every morning at 3 AM to oil the flute…

There are certain sacrifices you have to make.
